Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar hailed Joseph Biden’s victory over incumbent President Donald Trump in the November 3 presidential election in the United States as an important moment for the world  »

In a statement on his Facebook page on Saturday, Persad-Bissessar said Biden’s victory offered America a chance to reaffirm its place « as a force for good on the world stage

« A nation that will work with TT and other allies to defeat this pandemic (covid19), » she added

Persad-Bissessar said Biden, 77, who is due to be inaugurated as the 46th President of the United States on January 20, 2021, has led a campaign on decency, integrity, compassion and strength

Siparia MP also congratulated US Vice President-elect Kamala Harris on being the first woman and person of color to take on this role

Harris, 56, is of mixed descent His mother is Indian while his father is Jamaican

“Their victory is hope and unity over dishonesty and division Millions of Americans from all walks of life and ages have come together to vote for a better and more optimistic future”

Persad-Bissessar said she looks forward to forging an even stronger relationship between TT and the United States

« It was very hotly contested and all eyes were on the election around the world, » said the member for Tabaquite

« I think Joe Biden has a very interesting story for those of us who study political science and political history »

Haynes noted that Biden first declared his candidacy for the 1988 Democratic presidential nomination in June 1987 to become president-elect some 32 years later

Of Harris’ role as Vice President-elect of the United States, Haynes said, « It’s about representation and having more people at the decision-making table. It is also a testament to the greatness of the West Indies, that we truly find ourselves in all kinds of places « 

She said Biden and Harris have a lot of work to do « because the world is watching »
