The annual Leonid meteor shower will peak tonight when an average of 20 meteor stars appear, showing streaks across the night sky every hour.

The Leonids family is known for its brightness and color, and has some moving rocks faster than any annual showers – traveling at 44 miles per second.

Stargazers should see about 20 meteors an hour if the sky is clear, making it easier to spot by a dark crescent that is only 2 percent full.

You can see the falling stars by looking east toward the constellation Leo – but you can find an area with clear skies with low light pollution.

Most of the UK is expected to be covered by clouds over the next 24 hours, so finding clear skies can be difficult, according to the UK Met Office

To get the most out of your annual view, head outside right after midnight and use a wide-angle lens to get as much of the sky as possible if you want to get pictures..

NASA says the best way to view a shower is to find an area completely away from street lights, wear warm clothes and lie down with your feet facing east.

Most of the UK is expected to be covered by clouds over the next 24 hours, so finding clear skies can be difficult, according to the UK Met Office.

There should be clear skies in the US during prime time except for some storms along the country’s west coast..

Meteor stars travel at about 45 miles per second (72 km / s) and nearly half of them leave visible trains that slow down sometimes for seconds after.

Leonid’s shower occurs when meteors, small rocks, fall toward Earth after separating from comet Temple-Tuttle..

These burn and evaporate before hitting the Earth’s surface – causing a streak of hot air that we see as an upward star.

Views are best when comet Tempel-Tuttle, which takes 33 years to orbit the Sun, is closer to Earth, an event that will occur about 15 years later..

Since the meteorites that cause meteors are all moving in a parallel path, and at the same speed, they appear to originate from one point in the sky for observers on Earth, known as radiation.

The Leonid meteor shower can be seen all over the world but it is best seen in areas with low light pollution like the Azraq desert in Jordan, pictured here

The Leonid meteorite gets its name from its radiation, and it is the point at which meteorites appear in the constellation Leo.

Every 33 years, a Leonid meteor shower arrives in the form of a meteor storm, with over 1,000 bright stars per hour..

In the year 2034, researchers expect observers to have the opportunity to see 2,000 meteors an hour in a Leonid storm.

The next major meteorite in the sky will be Gemini in mid-December. This is the most powerful meteor showers of the year at 120 meteors per second.

An asteroid is a large chunk of rock left over from the collision or early solar system. Most of it is located between Mars and Jupiter in the main belt.

A comet is a rock covered with ice, methane, and other compounds. Their orbits take them away from the solar system.

A meteor is what astronomers call a flash of light in the atmosphere when debris burns out.

This debris itself is known as a meteorite. Most of them are so small that they flow into the atmosphere.

For example, if the Earth passes through a comet’s tail, a lot of debris will burn in the atmosphere, causing meteors to fall.
