Huddersfield MP Barry Sheerman wrote a passionate letter to Health Secretary Matt Hancock pleading for Kirklees to stay at Level 2

The Kirklees multi-stakeholder Outbreak Control Committee, which is publicizing the region’s concerns to the government, fears that if a level 3 move is imposed it will have a devastating impact on pubs and bars without impacting direct on infection rates

Fears are growing that Kirklees, Wakefield and Calderdale will be sucked into Tier 3 as Leeds and Bradford struggle to deal with the virus

Communities Secretary Robert Jenrick said talks would take place today (Thursday) on increased restrictions for Leeds and West Yorkshire

In his letter, M Sheerman says: « I am writing to you regarding Kirklees’ status under the Covid tier system recently introduced by your department

« As you know Kirklees, including my own constituency of Huddersfield, is currently under level 2 restrictions in an attempt to control the spread of the virus

« While I support measures to contain this terrible disease, I share the unanimous opinion of the Kirklees Outbreak Control Committee that the situation locally is not as serious as in some of the places that have been placed at level 3

« I have attached a copy of the statement made by the Council, to which I am a co-signer. I would appreciate your time to read the statement and consider keeping my constituency, as well as the rest of Kirklees, in the level 2 restrictions at the moment

« The Kirklees Council and public health authorities are working hard and a ‘blanket’ approach to increasing restrictions would not be welcome at this time »

He also notes that Bradford Council leader Cllr Susan Hinchcliffe said she believes the government is committed to placing WY at level 3, despite the Outbreak Board’s belief that this is not a favorable outcome for Kirklees
