ANNAN Athletic produced another sensational Galabank Cup shock on Hamilton after an 11-minute frenzy in the first half

The Ligue 2 side knocked Hamilton out of the Scottish Cup in 2016 and beat them in the Betfred Cup two years later

And they did it again by taking the scalp of their Premiership opponent in that Betfred Cup opener

Captain Steven Swinglehurt won the opener just after half an hour and before the interval Tyler Fulton and Jack Purdue had added to their goal tally

Hamilton threatened to come back when skipper Scott McMann scored early in the second half, but Annan saw the first leg to claim all three points

Accies called for a penalty as soon as Callum Smith fell into the area under a challenge from Swinglehurst, but referee Craig Napier was not interested

They had a period of sustained pressure with Marios Ogkmpoe seeing a shot squirm under Jordan Pettigrew, but the keeper has just enough to deflect him

The great Greek striker then had a header from a McMann corner cleared from the Lewis Hunter line

Then Hakeem Odoffin’s header was cleared by Swinglehurst and the tall defender also gave a free-headed glance at a David Templeton corner

Hamilton was forced to pay for not taking his chance as Annan went on a goal streak before the interval

The opening came after 31 minutes when the Jack Purdue corner found Nathan Flanagan on the edge of the box and pushed him back into the danger zone where Swinglehurt was on hand to sweep him into the net

Annan second came just six minutes later as Fulton’s looping header from a Purdie corner should have been a comfortable grip for Kyle Gourlay, but she slipped between the goalie’s grip and the back end of the net

It’s even better for Annan when they landed a third after 42 minutes Purdur pushed his way into the area, passing a few challenges before hitting the ball past Gourlay

Hamilton had to produce a sensational comeback if they were to avoid more cup misery at Galabank and they cut the deficit after 50 minutes when McMann threw a Templeton corner past Pettigrew

They should have claimed a second but Smith sent a free header on a free kick from Templeton over the bar, while Ogkmpoe fired a good chance late

« I have a team on the park that should have won this game. I have never taken out a weakened team and I am really disappointed

« There are no hiding places and there are no excuses We made individual mistakes and couldn’t score when we were at the top

« Everyone likes to blame everyone else, but there’s only one person I blame and that’s me I’m angry, I’m angry and embarrassed

« For the first 30 minutes we were way above it, but we just couldn’t achieve this goal

« We cleared one off the line and then took advantage of our turns Goals change games and we dug in the end because we knew we would be under pressure

« Hope our race will continue in the future if we collect them It’s a coincidence but I hope it continues

« The biggest problem tonight is that we have returned to competitive football after such a long absence

« However the outcome turned out, and it turned out for us tonight, the main thing was to come back and play, which I think is great »
