Jürgen Klopp felt Liverpool were playing with a ‘big heart’ as they edged Sheffield United 2-1 in the Premier League on Saturday night

The Reds had to recover from the early setback after falling behind on a Sander Berge penalty after just 13 minutes of play at Anfield

They did it first through Roberto Firmino, who tapped after Sadio Mane got a close-range header parried by goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale

Mohamed Salah had an effort ruled out by a VAR exam after the break, but moments later Diogo Jota took the winner as he peeked in from a Mane cross

The Blades put pressure in the final stages as they searched for an equalizer, but the hosts were able to resist their attacks and see the contest

The result elevates the champions on points with Everton at the top of the table – and afterwards Klopp spoke to reporters at his post-match press conference

Well, a tough week obviously – lots of games, lots of minutes, tough opponents, tough opponents [We] won the two [games] after the Merseyside derby, so really happy with that obviously It’s all

No fault This is now the sixth [Premier League] game of the season, in three of them we were on the wrong side of those kinds of decisions It’s not about wanting to have an advantage – we just don’t want to have a disadvantage, as you can imagine This is the situation today We were really good at the start of the game [and] the penalty we have conceded gave Sheffield a proper boost Until then they couldn’t really understand us, to be honest But with all the quality they have and the problems they caused us, it was fine until then Then we lost a little patience, we don’t have exactly what we wanted to do [We] still scored a goal in the best attack actually, while the formation was in the best place and all that Came at half-time, adjusted a few things, started very well in the second half and scored a second goal; scored another that was, I don’t know anymore offside or not Mo had this amazing luck, great playing from him We didn’t score so the game stayed open and they had their moments, but we defended well with a big heart And so I loved it

On the lineup change, if that was a way to get Jota into the starting XI, and how he thought it worked…

Good in a lot of times It wasn’t so much about getting Diogo onto the pitch as he can play a lot of positions in our current roster, our usual roster It was like, « How do we start? How can we change? How can we do everything that is important in a game? How can we cause them problems? »Sheffield United obviously have a big advantage, as they are preparing a full week for our game They can make 12 different sets, to train them during the week; we have recovery sessions so we thought that with a slight change we could at least give them some problems, which we actually did.The very first ball was an amazing ball – and we weren’t playing that ball anymore, unfortunately – when Sadio had passed and Mo was almost there The idea was not to change too much for us as these are just moments Of course in terms of defense it’s completely different Offensively it’s not so different But it gives us an extra option It took Mo to a different position, where I have to say he played an amazing game Mo and Sadio didn’t score but played exceptionally Sadio was in individual situations pretty much indefensible Mo between the lines, sensational Super luck And the other two boys scored and played as well, so that obviously helps

Look, Adrian did really well again at that point, but Ali’s comeback is of course a really big boost for all of us. It’s been almost three weeks since he’s been away, I think, and he feels like we’ve had 50 games by then! I was really happy when he gave the green light and said, ‘Yes I’m ready’ because it was his decision I can’t make the decision for him and say, ‘Do you still feel pain or too much pain when you bounce off the floor or whatever? So that was his decision and he said a thumbs up and we were so happy

It’s not really what he brought to the team He’s a good player, that’s why we signed him I said it just a few minutes ago when I was speaking to my coaches it was so easy – he’s such a nice person and so it’s so easy to love him It makes everything easier So the player that he is: he’s fast, he’s got the physicality, he’s strong he’s good in the air he’s good on the pitch a lot of good stuff he’s got exactly the quality we need which helps a lot tonight it was a game where all four played forward together and you know how good Shaqiri was in Amsterdam and he is close Taki is very close and so all of these things help of course This is the area where we have options at the moment and keep it for a long time like that In midfield we had to make the decision: do we push back the same midfielder? How can we change then and all that stuff We thought it was better to change the system before the game and go back to the [usual] in-game system when we need to change That’s why we decided for tonight [to change formation] Yes, Diogo scored a great goal and was really involved in the game. He can be much better, 100%, and that’s good news

He’s still adapting Right now, a lot of the things we do that aren’t natural to him, but that’s only because wolves play differently – but a lot of the things he’s done for wolves are exactly what we want him to do Yes, that he’s already so close is just a sign of how good he is as a player Like I said, if he stays fit he’s 23 and the future is bright, let tell me like this We will need its quality and I’m really glad it has settled down well so far
