A spokesperson for Devon and Cornwall Police said: ‘Police were called at 12.25pm today at the M5 in Cullompton over concerns for the welfare of a person on the northbound carriageway.
« One person was found on the road after suffering serious injuries and has since been confirmed dead at the scene
« The road was initially closed in both directions, but southbound carriageway lanes one and two have since been reopened.
« Northbound drivers are advised to avoid the area and use alternate routes where possible as the road is expected to remain closed for a considerable time.
« Anyone with information is asked to contact the police on 101 quoting the newspaper 313 of September 28 »
Highways England expects the northern section of the motorway to be closed this afternoon and drivers are urged to avoid the area
A spokesperson said: “Drivers planning to travel on the M5 this afternoon are warned to expect serious delays as the road is closed northbound between junctions 27 (Barnstaple / Tiverton) and 26 ( Wellington) following a serious incident
« The northbound carriageway is expected to be closed for some time, possibly until peak afternoon, while Devon and Cornwall Police investigate, and drivers are urged to avoid the area if possible and consider finding alternative routes
« All northbound and southbound lanes were closed as of 1230 hrs, southbound traffic being diverted from exit 26
« The southbound carriageway is being reopened imminently with a three lane closure after the scene, and drivers are urged to be aware of any residual delays
« Northbound traffic is diverted via the A38 from junction 27, to merge onto the motorway at junction 26 and an operation to clear blocked northbound traffic will add to the initial delays »
