Salford City co-owner Paul Scholes was temporarily in charge of Ammies after boss Graham Alexander was sacked

Manchester United legend Scholes takes over in the Peninsula Stadium dugout after League Two club sacked Alexander

Alexander had been Salford manager for more than two years since his appointment in May 2018, where he succeeded former co-managers Bernard Morley and Anthony Johnson who guided the Ammies towards promotion to the National League North, before moving on to leave and take over at Chester FC

The former Preston North End and Burnley man oversaw Salford’s promotion to League 2 after winning the National League play-off final against Eastleigh and reaching the EFL for the first time in club history last year

Alexander led the Ammies to 11th overall last season, when the campaign was halted early due to the coronavirus pandemic

Salford is fifth in Ligue 2 and is unbeaten so far this season in second place

Alexander’s last game at the helm of the Ammies was Salford’s 2-2 draw against the Tranmere Rovers at Peninsula Stadium in Warekend

Scholes will be helped in his role as interim head coach by Warren Joyce, who is currently self-isolating, while a new permanent manager is sought

Scholes co-owns Salford with his Class 92 teammates Gary and Phil Neville, Nicky Butt, Ryan Giggs and David Beckham, as well as Singaporean businessman Peter Lim

A club statement read: « Salford City Football Club announces coach Graham Alexander has left the club with immediate effect

Scholes’ only previous management experience in the EFL came last year with local club Oldham Athletic, where he spent just over a month at Boundary Park before stepping down and supervising seven games in charge
