Greenlights details his adventurous childhood, teen oddities, and how his parents’ troubled relationship affected his home life.. Remembering his formative years in these details became possible by re-reading the diary he kept from the age of 18.

“I was embarrassed reading about times when I was sure I would be an arrogant little P-R-I-C-K, sir who knows everything. I went back and read it and saw all these things, « McConaughey jokes. «  But most of the time I looked at, thinking I would be embarrassed about it, I was actually laughing.

“Without this arrogance, I don’t know if I would have the confidence to put myself in some situations where I learned a better lesson,” McConaughey adds..

The search for knowledge is a theme throughout the book, and McConaughey has gone to great lengths to find answers. Two of the most striking stories in the book illustrate McConaughey’s individual spiritual journeys to Brazil and Mali. He proceeded to both after experiencing the same wet dream.
