TOMMY MCCARTHY DE BELFAST is the new European cruiserweight champion after claiming a majority decision victory over Belgian Bilal Laggoune on the flip side of Oleksandr Usyk’s heavyweight bout against Dereck Chisora on Sky Sports Box Office
The 29-year-old ‘Mac Attack’ rightly received the contest on scores of 116-112, 116-113 and 114-114, and by tying the boxing Union’s blue belt (EBU) around his waist take one more step towards a global dream title
The former Irish amateur star started relatively slowly, losing perhaps two of the first four rounds, but had built a sufficiently healthy lead as the Championship rounds approached that even a late flurry from Laggoune was not enough to bring him closer to two of the three cards
I was a fight in which neither of the two men was seriously injured but both were exhausted: McCarthy’s bodywork in particular slowed down Laggoune in the second half, but the clumsy Belgian didn’t has not been without success; he landed a lot of clean work but was generally reactive rather than proactive, with McCarthy always showing a sense that he was in charge of the procedures
The West Belfast man got tired in the last few rounds as well, but after shipping a few and enduring his only real hairy moments, McCarthy sucked him in and produced a strong final verse to confirm its general superiority
