FA Cup loss at Fratton Park in 2016: The referee points the finger after Piotr Malarczyk conceded a first-half penalty in Town’s 2-1 loss Image: PAGEPIX
Unlike hosts from Ipswich Town, the proud Portsmouth have continued to enjoy considerable FA Cup success over the past 15 years, and they arrive at Portman Road tomorrow with an impressive recent away record
Pompey lifted the FA Cup for the second time in its history, following his 1938-39 success with a 1-0 win over Cardiff City in the 2007-08 Wembley final
Two years later, Pompey reached the final again, having beaten Tottenham in the semi-final before losing 1-0 to Chelsea

And although Town has struggled to clear the FA Cup’s first hurdle in recent times, winning just one of their last 18 games in the competition spanning 11 seasons, Portsmouth has continued to enjoy of exciting Cup races
Last season alone they progressed from round one to round five, victories over Harrogate, Altrincham, Fleetwood and Barnsley ultimately ended in a 2-0 home loss to a young Arsenal side
The previous campaign they reached the fourth round, via wins over Maidenhead, Rochdale and away to Norwich City, before losing a replay to QPR
So they are used to going far in this competition, a feeling that has been foreign to the city’s supporters of the current generation
In fact, Kenny Jackett’s men, in this fanless, closed-door game environment, have had more success on the outside than when they came back to Fratton Park. Certainly that noisy atmosphere associated with the famous old house of Pompey was sadly missed
During their travels, Pompey streaked a 3-0 win at troubled Southend, in the EFL Trophy, with a quartet of away league wins at Burton Albion (4-2), Gillingham (2- 0), Sunderland (3-1) and Lincoln City (3-1) The last of those came on Tuesday night, with former Doncaster Rovers striker John Marquis scoring a brace in the win at Sincil Bank, which moved them within two points of Ipswich, second
Marquis had also scored a brace helping end Sunderland’s unbeaten start to Phil Parkinson’s season
So it’s no surprise that Portsmouth currently lead the Ligue 1 away table with four wins in five games and 13 points, compared to Town’s seven points in six away games.
John Marquis leads the Ligue 1 goals list with seven goals (eight in all competitions)
Danger-man Marquis scored 67 goals in 153 first-team appearances for his former club Doncaster, before moving to Fratton Park in a deal valued at just under £ 2million at the summer 2019
In fact, the Hampshire club have two representatives in the top five, with teammate Marcus Harness scoring five goals in joint fifth place The former Burton Albion winger also weighed in with four assists
Pompey boss Jackett has bolstered his squad with a number of shrewd signings over the past few months, most of them contributing to a recent strong streak of just two losses in nine
Defensemen Sean Raggett, Callum Johnson, Cameron Pring and Rasmus Nicolaisen all started in midweek victory at Lincoln
Center-half Raggett was signed for a free transfer from Norwich City in early August, having played just two games for the Canaries, while right-back Johnson was taken away from Accrington Stanley and left-back 23-year-old Pring was signed on a one-season loan from Bristol City
Young center-half Nicolaisen, who helped FC Midtjylland win the Danish elite title for the second time in three years last season, is on loan for the entire campaign
Other new players this season include midfielder Michael Jacobs, who arrived from Wigan Athletic, and forward Jordy Hiwula, who had spent two seasons at Coventry Hiwula was an unused midweek substitute
The only missing will be the injured duo of Jack Whatmough and recent rookie Jacobs, as well as left-back Lee Brown, who polished his hamstrings during the warm-up at Sincil Bank
Both clubs have made four FA Cup appearances in the past 14 years, and Town has yet to win with three losses and a draw There were 1-0 home defeats in the third round in 2006 and in 08, while a 2-2 draw at home in 2016 was followed by a 2-1 defeat in replay
