World News – GB – Michael Kiwanuka wins 2020 Mercury Prize for KIWANUKA


The Muswell Hill musician, who was the odds favorite for the award, triumphed over 11 other nominees, including Stormzy, Dua Lipa, Charli XCX and Laura Marling

This means he is claiming a cash prize of £ 25,000 and joins an illustrious list of past winners, who over the years have featured such figures as Dave, PJ Harvey, Dizzee Rascal and Arctic Monkeys

Due to current restrictions on major events, the winner was announced by DJ Annie Mac live on the BBC during an episode of The One Show, instead of the usual awards ceremony

Speaking after receiving the award, Kiwanuka said, « It blew me away Music and art mean so much to me, that’s all I’ve ever wanted to do, and that’s an award that celebrates this I’m in heaven, man « 

The 33-year-old third album was released last November with wide critical acclaim. Standard gave it five stars, writing that it was « collectively more raw and noisy than its predecessor, just as impressive and really very special »

His victory means he wins the Mercury Prize in the third time in demand, after being nominated for his two previous albums

The 12-member jury this year featured artists such as Jorja Smith and Anna Calvi, alongside a number of personalities from the music and journalism world The shortlist, which was tasked with identifying the best British or Irish album of last year, made history in 2020 with a record number of women – eight of the 12 nominees were either women, groups led by women or groups with a female member
