Late goals from Britt Assobalonga and Djed Spence earned Middlesbrough a 2-0 victory over Coventry at Riverside Stadium

After a frustrating night for the home side as the Sky Blues defended themselves firmly after a 4-0 home loss to Blackburn, Boro finally found the net with nine minutes left to move up to seventh place of the championship

Assombalonga’s season opener was the catalyst for victory to extend Middlesbrough’s unbeaten run to seven games and Spence closed things off with a second in stoppage time

It came one night when Coventry, now winless in six games, battled away and looked their strongest just as Neil Warnock’s side struck

Overall, Mark Robins’ visitors rarely looked like they were winning at Riverside for the first time, even though they did look decent in possession at times.

Middlesbrough’s first clear chance came in the 18th minute when Marcus Tavernier, initially operating on the left, saw a low cross dropped by goalkeeper Marko Marosi The loose ball rolled towards Sam Morsy but the midfielder terrain dragged its effort away when it should have at least hit the target at 12 meters

Coventry’s defensive trio of Dominic Hyam, Leo Ostigard and Kyle McFadzean did well to win their fair share of heads to frustrate Patrick Roberts and Assombalonga in the main

But Coventry was grateful to Marosi for being in the right place after half an hour when he stood firm and parried Tavernier’s drive to goal Coventry’s back line erased from there

Closest Coventry scored in the first half moments earlier when lone striker Matt Godden pushed his way behind the defense in an attempt to end Sam McCallum’s dangerous delivery

After halftime Middlesbrough continued to control the game more and within four minutes of the restart Jonny Howson missed two efforts

Then, after Gustavo Hamer had a shot comfortably saved by Marcus Bettinelli at the other end, Morsy moved closer as his strike from the edge of the box deflected Hamer and bounced off the bar.

There was an effort from Tavernier with the hour approaching where he cut inside and punched Marosi in the arms at his nearby post, as the heat started to build over Coventry

As the minutes went by, more gaps appeared and the visitors started to look more dangerous during the break Assombalonga was, however, the next to come close when he was heading up close

But he wasn’t wrong with nine minutes to go.The Middlesbrough captain took a touch and then applied a soft finish to Marosi’s right to give the points to Warnock’s men

In the stoppage time, Spence came full circle when he kicked the ball past Marosi before rolling into the empty net as Coventry pressed for an equalizer

Middlesbrough’s Neil Warnock: « I liked it a lot tonight I knew it would be tough, the result Saturday for Coventry (a 4-0 loss to Blackburn) with the expulsion, you knew they would come to defend in number We had most of the chances Just be patient, the games to be won by hook or crook We missed a few more chances in the second half but we deserved it

« The toughest games are the ones you don’t expect Cardiff, Bristol City take care of themselves I was really happy with the attitude, the app I was happy with everything «

Mark Robins from Coventry: « We’re struggling right now, we need to do the basics better, win tackles, headers Earn the right to play football, then follow him We have a ways to go but from our point of view we haven’t played football for six months so it was a setback for us The others are in the middle of the season now – we are trying to catch up, to reach a level

« We’re already one of the smaller budgets too I’m not looking for excuses but there are reasons to watch We’re a bit late It would be a shame not to go We have injuries and suspensions, returning players who will take time, but we’ll be a good team At some point we’ll start to believe but they can’t lose that focus «
