World News – GB – Mourinho must make big decisions to make sure Kane and Son’s work is not wasted

Tottenham Hotspur are scoring goals for fun in the Premier League so far this season, notably thanks to Harry Kane and Son Heung-min, but they still have to keep a clean sheet

Harry Kane added two more to his tally against West Ham United on Sunday, and also had seven assists for the season with a superb assist to set the prolific Son Heung-min ready for the game’s opening goal ahead of the pair combined again against Burnley

No team has scored more than Spurs’ 16 goals in the first six games of the Premier League season so far Kane looks almost unstoppable, operating in a deeper role and the spray passes behind for Son Gareth Bale is now in the equation too, making his bench debut last Sunday

Unfortunately things were less impressive at the back Tottenham looked relatively comfortable throughout against West Ham, but squandered a 3-0 lead under the most demoralizing circumstances and had need some good Hugo Lloris saves to keep Burnley winless at bay

Jose Mourinho claimed after the final whistle against West Ham that « the football happened », and there was certainly an element of doom in the result No one could have predicted Manuel Lanzini’s astonishing goal to score 3-3 with practically the last kick of the match

The previous two goals were avoidable, however West Ham’s first, which at the time seemed little more than consolation, was a set-piece into the box, where Fabian Balbuena easily took over. Moussa Sissoko and returned home

The second came from a more lethargic defense, with Vladimir Coufal played on the right and his cross diverted into the net by Davinson Sanchez, whose work at the back was questionable

So there are some obvious issues to be tackled in defense, although this is not really new Spurs struggled to keep clean sheets last season, even after the appointment of Mourinho, a manager known for his ability, at the very least, to ensure that its teams are disciplined and resilient

The draw with West Ham was Tottenham’s 10th without a clean sheet and although they kept one against Burnley it now feels like there has to be some sort of radical change we could argue that Mourinho’s inherent prudence encouraged West Ham, encouraged them on the path to a miraculous return

But this is how the Portuguese have always done it He was never one to take the lead and go for the jugular, preferring instead to manage games, preserve and play it safe

If this is proving difficult at Spurs, it is probably, at least in part, due to staff Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld were once the division’s most reliable center-back under Mauricio Pochettino The first left in summer, and the second seems to have exceeded its best

Sanchez, meanwhile, is a gifted player in his day, but mistakes like the one that resulted in an own goal on Sunday are all too common.

Spurs’ full-four may need to be refreshed and taken to a new era Joe Rodon, signed from Swansea City just before the domestic transfer window ends, could be the answer The 22-year-old is a exciting talent, a young defender who could be the future at Tottenham

Mourinho is clearly a fan of Eric Dier too and he returned from injury straight into the starting lineup on Monday night It wouldn’t be a surprise to see him start alongside Rodon in the future once the Welshman settles into Premier League football

Spurs, given the consistency with which they score goals, don’t need to be completely waterproof They don’t need to be as ungenerous as Mourinho’s first team at Chelsea, or as his fighting and fierce Inter team

The key is to find an installed four and trust Mourinho’s ability to eventually create a functioning defensive unit
