An extremely divisive project for a new train station was realized with almost 12 million. GBP awarded for the construction of the new train station.
Thanet Parkway Station in Cliffsend, just outside Ramsgate, is one of six “shovel-ready” programs in Kent funded by the South East Local Enterprise Partnership (SELEP). .
The organization says the project will help fuel economic growth and encourage foreign investment to the island.
The controversial railway program worth 34 million. GBP was approved by the Kent County Council Planning Committee in September despite bipartisan opposition from Thanet District Councils.
Supporting members of the committee said there were no planning reasons to refuse and praised the economic benefits to the area.
The project includes the construction of an unmanned station on a 9th. 27 acre green field two miles east of Ramsgate that will have up to six trains per hour and two platforms.
There will also be a 317 parking lot and a new signposted intersection that will allow vehicles to access on the A299 Hengist Way.
The rail link on the Ramsgate Line is two main routes from Thanet via Tonbridge to London Charing Cross and via Ashford to London St. Pancras run. The drive from Cliffsend to Stratford International is expected to take 69 minutes.
Travel times to London will be reduced by around three minutes on Cliffsend’s HS1 connection, but passengers from existing Thanet stations will face longer travel times due to the new service.
Critics wonder whether the development, from the 5 million. GBP to be taken over by KCC will actually help boost the economy.
But Geoff Miles, chairman of the SELEP Kent and Medway Economic Partnership, supports the program.
« The new Thanet Parkway train station will provide better access to communities on Kent’s expansive coastline and provide these residents with access to more extensive employment and training opportunities, » he said.
« It will also make these areas far more accessible, and therefore more attractive and viable for commuters, » which in turn will lead to greater foreign investment. «
KCC insists that the new train station will improve rail links and provide local residents with access to more employment opportunities.
