Millions of households will be able to apply for a one-time home renovation voucher starting today, as the new government grant for green homes opens to the public

The initiative, first announced in July, aims to save households money on their energy bills by making homes more efficient while helping the UK meet its targets for zero carbon emissions

The vouchers are worth up to £ 5,000 and can be used for a number of energy efficiency and heating measures, such as insulation and double glazing The government says it will cover up to two third of the improvement costs for the average eligible household

However, those on lower incomes and on certain benefits will see 100% of their costs covered, with £ 10,000 to upgrade their accommodation and low traffic extra rooms

But a major flaw in the system could mean millions of people who desperately need support will lose out

New YouGov research shows up to 98 million poor energy efficient homeowners want to take advantage of the program when it launches

However, only 600,000 vouchers will be up for grabs as of Wednesday September 30, meaning the majority of those hoping to lower their bills will not get the support

Of homeowners surveyed, 62% were in low-energy properties – which YouGov says equates to 149 million homes in England

Of that amount, 66% said they were « somewhat interested » or « very interested » in the green house grant – the same as 98 million households

The government says it will assess each request individually, not on a first come, first served basis

Before applying, households should visit the Simple Energy Advice (SEA) website to check if they are eligible and what support they can get

Business and Energy Secretary Alok Sharma said: “Green house grants are a key part of our greener reconstruction plans, helping make 600,000 homes more energy efficient thanks to government coupons , while supporting 100,000 skilled jobs and supporting our transition to net zero carbon emissions by 2050

« Starting today, people will have the chance to see how this program could help them save money on their energy bills and connect with trusted local traders through the country «

Open applications for the program are now open through the government Green Homes Grant portal

To apply, you must first use the Simple Energy Advice (SEA) website to see what energy saving improvements can be made to your home

The SEA website will then feature certified tradespeople in your area who can undertake the work – it is recommended that you get at least three quotes to ensure you get the best price.

Once you’ve found a price, ask for the voucher – but don’t accept any work until you confirm your voucher

You must ensure that the job is scheduled to be completed and that the voucher is used subject to its terms and conditions, by March 31, 2021

Jess Ralston, analyst at the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU), said: « It is no surprise that the Green Homes Grant appears to be popular among the publicÂ

“This can only be good news for consumers and traders alike, as bills will be reduced and jobs created across the country, while also benefiting the environmentâ ????

Peter Smith, director of policy and research for the National Energy Action (NEA) charity for the fight against energy poverty, said: “Millions of people across the UK are facing winter in dangerous properties or unsuitable for colder seasonsÂ

« During cold spells, unsanitary housing can lead to a sharp increase in energy consumption, unnecessary loss of life and avoidable stress on our heavily used health services

« The UK government’s recent investment to improve the energy efficiency of our leaky homes is extremely welcome »
