OXFORD must be placed in level 2 of Covid restrictions, government decided

Residents of the city will have to comply with the new level 2 rules from this Saturday, October 31

Rates per 100,000 Oxford residents rose to 1,371 for the week ending October 23

The rest of Oxfordshire will remain subject to the relatively relaxed Tier 1 restrictions for now

But according to Oxfordshire County Council, Covid rates in the rest of the county are on the rise

The cases per 100,000 in the various districts of Oxfordshire are 1515 in Cherwell, 922 in South Oxfordshire, 912 in Vale of White Horse and 1094 in West Oxfordshire

The decision to keep the rest of Oxfordshire at Level 1 was taken by the government despite the advice of the county public health director and the support of local political leaders on all sides, from local business leaders to Oxford Local Enterprise Partnerships and representatives of local health trusts

Ian Hudspeth, Head of Oxfordshire County Council, said: “The continued increase in numbers in the county has once again been discussed with central government and Public Health England and it has been agreed that this is the opportune time for Oxford to upgrade to level 2

‘However, we remain gravely concerned about the increase in the number of cases in the county, and not just in Oxford We are deeply disappointed that despite clear evidence showing that the virus is now spreading to older and more vulnerable communities across the county, our demand for Oxfordshire as a whole to be upgraded to Level 2 has not approved

‘My five fellow Local Authority leaders and I strongly believe this is a necessary step to stem the spread of the virus, protect our communities and the economy of Oxfordshire Our position has the full support of the CEOs of our NHS partners and the Oxfordshire Local Business Partnership, and we will continue to push for the rest of the county to happen as quickly as possible based on the epidemiological evidence. »
