British Prime Minister Boris Johnson will chair a Cabinet meeting this midday to discuss the government’s response to the coronavirus, amid reports he will announce a month-long nationwide lockdown on Monday
The Prime Minister’s official spokesperson said: « Cabinet will meet at 1.30 a.m. today to discuss the government’s response to the coronavirus »
It comes after a document presented to the government said the Southwest would be one of the first areas to run out of hospital capacity if nothing is done to stop the spread of the coronavirus – and could run out of capacity within two weeks
Professor Calum Semple, a member of the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (Sage), speaking in his personal capacity, told BBC Radio 4’s Today program that the coronavirus is ‘rioting’ in all groups age
« For those naysayers who don’t believe in a second wave, there is a second wave, » said Prof Semple
When asked what could be achieved with a reported four-week lockdown, Professor Semple said: ‘If this were nationally enforced and respected, you would see a dramatic drop in admissions to hospital and it’s in four weeks »
He suggested that there should be a review in four weeks and that there could be « a bit of relaxation around the party activities » but that a lockdown would give officials « time to test, monitor and isolate the processes really up to par ”
A nationwide lockdown would be ‘absolutely devastating’ for the hospitality industry, said Kate Nicholls of UK Hospitality
She expected that some companies would not be able to trade at all and the industry would need « considerable additional help to overcome this situation »
She told BBC Breakfast: « People have borrowed to the hilt and spent money to get Covid safe
« There is no capacity available in the tank to be able to finance a foreclosure, even for three to four weeks »
