The chain’s outlets in Luton and Dunstable shared the theme « Workout of the Month » with the tagline « Slavery was tough and it is too »

The gym said the routine was based on the movie ’12 Years A Slave ‘, the Daily Star reported

The gym shared a screenshot of the routine with the caption: « Entitled ’12YearsOfSlave’ (after the epic movie) this is our workout of the month designed by @mattsimpt to celebrate History Month blacks

« The twist at this is 1 rep of your first exercise, 2 of the second but before moving on to the third exercise which is also 3 reps you have to start at the beginning to continue AND this is how the workout goes. unrolls »

The diet also required gym goers to do a 100-meter sprint, push-ups and pistol squats

The gym came under heavy criticism after the post was shared on his Facebook page, before being deleted

The routine was based on the Oscar-winning film ’12 Years A Slave, directed by Steve McQueen

The heartbreaking film tells the true story of Solomon Northup, a black New Yorker who was kidnapped in 1841 and forced to work on a New Orleans plantation after being sold as a slave

After regaining his freedom following a legal battle, he returned to his family and wrote a memoir about his heartbreaking experience – on which the film was based

A spokesperson for PureGym apologized for the statement and said their gym’s social channels are managed locally
