While there is talk of another fundamental change to the 2020 season on the immediate agenda, Richard Agar and Daryl Powell have focused on the first Leeds v Castleford derby in fifteen months so that the Rhinos were looking to fight their way over the Catalan Dragons while the Tigers intended to make life as difficult as possible for their neighbors
Both sides were almost at full strength and it was certain it will be a rocky affair, despite the chilly conditions, at Emerald Headingley Leeds were favorites with the bookies, with the Tigers getting a ten point start on the handicap coupon But it was the « derby » and everything was possible
A nineteen-point win would lift the Tigers above the Giants and to seventh, but Leeds knew that a win wouldn’t be enough to see them in the top four but would relieve the pressure from Hull FC behind them
Liam Watts knocked out the Rhinos with a try in the first two minutes after Richie Myler hit on a towering kick Watts was on hand to throw a cheeky little kick from Danny Richardson, through the Richardson posts added the two extra for a 6-0 lead
Ava Seumanufagai took the Rhinos level after Kruise Leeming stripped the ball and in the next play the big man propelled the cross, with three Tigers defensemen unable to stop him Rhys Martin added the conversion for 6-6
Alex Mellor was kicked off the ball by Oliver Holmes at twenty-two and on the resulting second penalty tackle Richie Myler was held over the line Leeds forced a retire thanks to Luke Gale’s start but lost the ball in the first postponement
It was a cranky affair, with referee Grant having to read the riot act multiple times Oliver Holmes appeared to kick a crash with Myler and the loose Tigers before were shown in red, Castleford at twelve for fifty minutes
With five minutes left and the target of the Tigers aggression for most of the half, Luke Gale released the ball five times and after releasing his shoulder he went under. two tacklers to put the ball on the line Martin added the extras, the Rhinos 12-6 ahead
A suicidal Rhinos play on the last hooter, a wing kick from Cameron Smith, offered the ball to Greg Eden who ran eighty yards to get past the chasing defenders and score with Richardson sticks added conversion to level scores
The twelve men opened the scoring in the second half as Greg Eden scored a trademark steal try in the left corner as Leeds tackles tried to sideline him Richardson added the extras for a lead from 18-12
Konrad Hurrell stormed the Tigers line in 53rd place, but when he looked certain to score he hit the vertical padding and the Tigers defenders managed to hold him on his back Later in the set, Cam Smith moved closer but was again upset by an excellent defense from Castleford
Myler was held on fifty-seven and Matt Prior on sixty-two and Smith seconds later as the Rhinos besieged the Tigers line Finally, Liam Sutcliffe found some space on the left to cross a gap on a pass from Myler, fend off the last defender and put the ball on the ground Martin could not add the conversion, Leeds still two points behind
Olpherts lost the ball on his own twenty to sixty-eight and, as the Rhinos moved the ball quickly to the right, Tom Briscoe brilliantly managed to take Hurrell’s pass and bring the ball down acrobatically near corner flag Martin added converting from the sideline, Rhinos to a four-point lead
Six minutes from when Seumanufagai did another barn storm run and from the next play, the ball Martin took a pass from Rob Lui and ran the corner to dive Martin added the conversion, the Rhinos are now 28-18 ahead
Cheyse Blair received a seventy-eight penalty try when Konrad Hurrell stopped him from catching the ball after McShane kicked the corner Richardson added the conversion for 24-28 with seconds remaining on the clock But the Rhinos held their ground, forced a mistake and cut the clock to a four-point win
It was a good old school blood and thunder local derby with neither side giving a thumbs up and many massive personal battles on the pitch The Tigers went to Headingley to beat the Rhinos and pick their former idol Luke Gale for special treatment But it was the Rhinos skipper who had the final say as his forwards made the pitch and the full-back scored the most important tries to secure the victory over the twelve men from below
