World News – GB – Ryan Giggs says he felt ‘different’ because of race

Wales manager says the first time he felt different was when he moved to Manchester

Ryan Giggs has said he felt ‘different’ because of his Métis heritage when he left Wales for England as a child

The 46-year-old spoke about his experiences on the ITV Wales Can I Be Welsh And Black? program, which explored the importance of ethnicity in Wales today

Giggs told Richard Parks, a former Wales international rugby player, that he was « immensely proud » of his Métis heritage, with his father Danny Wilson, also a former rugby player, being black, and her mother Lynne Giggs, being white

At the age of seven, Giggs moved from Cardiff to Manchester after his father signed with a Swinton-based rugby club

Asked when he first felt ‘different’, he said: ‘I haven’t experienced anything in Cardiff I was seven so I don’t remember much before that It’s only when I moved to Manchester

« Where I lived my father was very well known, because he was such a good player. He was probably the best player on the team in this town

« But obviously everyone knew it was my dad, and my dad was clearly black, that’s really when I first experienced it. Which was a bit weird, because I had never experienced this before «

Giggs added that he defined himself as « mixed race », but didn’t want to « yell » about « that’s just who I am »

The former Manchester United winger recalled his visit to Wales to see his black cousins in the Cardiff docks area

He said: « It was weird because when I was in Manchester there weren’t any black people in my school. One or two And obviously when I come home I’m just surrounded by the my father’s family

« I loved There was a carnival every year on the docks, and I loved going there It was just normal for me It was great for me to have this diversity »

The Wales manager also added he had « no hesitation » in taking the knee in recent international matches to support the Black Lives Matter movement’s « important message »

He said the decision to take the knee was to show that the nation « has not endured discrimination or racism »

« There was no hesitation with myself, with my staff and with the team, » he added
