The Ammies have had no permanent bosses since Graham Alexander’s sacking last month
Since then, Salford co-owner and Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has been in charge of the League Two club on an interim basis, assisted in his duties by Warren Joyce
When Alexander was deleted, Joyce was installed as the initial favorite for work
But recently Swindon Town boss Wellens has become a favorite for the role
And he has now been confirmed as the club’s new manager, signing a deal at the Peninsula Stadium until the end of the 2022/23 campaign
Speaking to the club’s website, Wellens said: « This is a club that everyone is interested in because of the club profile, they are a growing club and I am a coach who wants to win matches
« Coming to Salford is an opportunity to win week after week, and it’s a fantastic opportunity for me to take the club to where they want to be
« The club have enjoyed incredible success over the past six years with Bern and Jonno winning promotions and Graham Alexander bringing them into the Football League, and I look forward to continuing that success
« Promotion at this level is more difficult, but the rewards are greater and I believe in continuing this success and giving the club an identity and style that reflects the people of Salford »
Wellens started his playing career at Old Trafford but has only played once for United in the League Cup
His playing days involved spells at Blackpool, Oldham Athletic, Doncaster Rovers, Leicester City, Ipswich Town, and Shrewsbury Town
Wellens spent more than eight months at the helm of the Latics before losing his job after Oldham’s relegation to Ligue 2 in 2018
He was named Swindon boss in November 2018 and last season led the Robins to the Ligue 2 title when the campaign was cut short due to the coronavirus pandemic and the scoreboard was drawn by match
Ammies co-owner Gary Neville said: « Richie is someone we know well from Manchester United and his previous spell here
« He is successful at this level having won the Ligue 2 title with Swindon Town last season, and his philosophy of playing attacking football is what we want to bring to the fans at Peninsula Stadium

« His knowledge of the region and the club having played for ourselves and gone through the youth ranks at Manchester United also fits the profile we were looking for
Former Wellens club Swindon issued a statement thanking his former manager for his efforts in charge of the Robins after winning a promotion last season and wishing him ‘every success in his new role and for the ‘future’
