Sharon D Clarke and Andrew Scott received top acting honors at this year’s delayed Olivier Awards, with Tom Stoppard’s Leopoldstadt named best newcomer of the year playing
Clarke received her third Olivier Award for her performance as Linda Loman in Young Vic’s Death of a Salesman; Scott wins Best Actor award for his role as Garry Essendine in The Old Vic’s Present Laughter He received Best Actor at the Evening Standard Theater Awards for the same performance in November last year
The new musicals were the biggest winners of the evening, with & Juliet and Broadway export Dear Evan Hansen each winning three awards Miriam-Teak Lee and Sam Tutty taking home best actress and best actor in a musical award for their main performances in each show
Sir Matthew Bourne received his ninth Olivier for his choreography for Mary Poppins, while Paule Constable won his fifth Olivier for lighting design for the National Theater production The Ocean at the End of the Lane Sir Ian McKellen and lyricist Don Black both received special awards
The winners were announced at a virtual event at the London Palladium, hosted by Jason Manford and broadcast on YouTube and ITV This year’s nominations were announced in early March, with the ceremony initially scheduled to take place in April before being postponed due to the pandemic
