Sky History has denied that a competitor of The Chop: Britain’s top carpenter has tattoos associated with white supremacists
The channel came under fire from angry Twitter followers after a clip from their new show revealed carpentry expert Darren had a tattoo of « 88 » on his face
The number 88 is associated with white supremacists, representing HH – « Heil Hitler » – because H is the eighth letter of the alphabet
However, Darren has « various digital tattoos » and the « 88 » refers to 1988, the year his father died
Following the backlash on social media, the channel tweeted in a statement: “Darren’s tattoos denote important events in his life and have no political or ideological significance Among the various digital tattoos on her body, 1988 is the year her father died
« The production team performed extensive background checks of all carpenters on the show, which confirmed that Darren had no affiliation or connection with any racist groups, opinions or comments
« Sky HISTORY does not tolerate racism and all forms of hatred and any use of symbols or numbers is entirely incidental and is not intended to cause prejudice or offense »
In the carpentry contest clip, host and comedian Lee Mack chats with Darren, who calls himself The Woodman
« I’m patient to a certain extent, » said Darren, « so if there are people bothering me, there might be fireworks »
‘I kind of introduce myself and say’ I’m the lumberjack ‘ »he says to Lee, who replies, » I’m not going to lie to you Darren, if you were the type in my town you wouldn’t be known as the lumberjack, you’d be the guy with all the tattoos
In response to the video, a subscriber tweeted: « Hope there is an episode about this tattoo and why it wasn’t covered »
Another fumed: « You put a guy with a NAZI tattoo ON HIS FACE on YOUR SHOW »
« The guy with the neo-Nazi tattoos I thought you were the story chain, » wrote another
Calling for Darren to be removed, one viewer tweeted: « This guy has a neo-Nazi symbol ON HIS FACE You have to kick him out of the show (i.e. give him The Chop) and introduce him to apologies Has anyone thought of doing research on this? ”
