World News – GB – « Slavery was tough, just like that »: PureGym apologizes for sharing « 12 years of slave » training for Black History Month

'Slavery was difficult, just like that,' said on Facebook

PureGym has apologized after being slammed for a post on a local Facebook page, announcing a workout titled « 12 Years Of Slave [sic] » To « Celebrate Black History Month » , which started on October 1

The post was shared on PureGym Luton’s & Dunstable Facebook page, which has 245 subscribers, on Monday morning, with the phrase: « Slavery was difficult and is it too »

It reads: « Entitled ’12YearsOfSlave’ (after the epic film) this is our workout of the month designed by @mattsimpt to celebrate Black History Month Slavery was tough and it is also

« The twist of this is one repetition of your first exercise, two of the second, but before moving on to the third exercise which is also three reps, you have to start at the beginning to continue 😉 AND this is how the workout is integer goes «

The post, which was liked 30 times when viewed by The Independent, drew criticism from its followers, calling it « deaf » and « offensive »

One Facebook user said: « Please delete this, apologize and do better It is incredibly inappropriate / offensive to compare hard workout (which, compared to slavery, is a walk in the park and undertaken on purpose) with the slave trade «

Another said: « Pure Gym must have a deaf, offensive-tone marketing team thinking it’s okay to compare training to ffs slavery »

« I appreciate that the local gym’s Facebook pages are probably run locally, but it’s under your brand and you should probably fix that shit, » another user added

Another article on the same page, published earlier this morning, read: « The profile of racial indifference has never been higher for some of us. We can only hope for change, but while we do, this month let’s profile the life changers who made so much possible for us [sic] «

PureGym responded to the reviews saying: « PureGym apologizes wholeheartedly for a post posted today by our Luton Gym This post is totally unacceptable, has not been endorsed or endorsed by the company and was deleted as soon as it was brought to our attention

« Each of our 271 gyms have their own social media channels which are managed locally. We take this issue very seriously and are urgently investigating how and why this post was made »
