Red Bull and Honda Junior Yuki Tsunoda won his third pole of the 2020 Formula 2 season in Sochi after overhauling Carlin teammate Jehan Daruvala with a final qualifying effort

Daruvala led the majority of the session, continuing the good pace he had shown in training, but Tsunoda ruined his party at the last minute to narrowly take pole position

When the 30-minute session began, Prema driver Mick Schumacher was the first to set a competitive lap time – a 1m49924s – but he was almost immediately moved off the timesheets by fellow junior Ferrari. Robert Shwartzman, who went three tenths faster with a time of 1m49634s

Hitech’s Daruvala and Nikita Mazepin then set the fastest times, before the Indian rider asserted his authority with a 1m49Flyer 068s – the fastest weekend lap to date

At the start of the second runs, Daruvala managed to find even more time, becoming the first rider to cross the 1m49s mark with a time of 1m48990s

Tsunoda managed to get to 1m49284s to temporarily make it a Carlin 1-2, before gaining seven tenths to snatch pole position from Daruvala

Daruvala himself managed to find plenty of time on his last flyer, but ultimately only fell from 0006s short of beating his teammate

Championship leader Schumacher qualified third with his late effort of 1m48883, with Callum Ilott completing the second row for Virtuosi

Ilott had fallen outside the top 10 after encountering traffic in his first run, but managed to climb back up to fourth with a late flyer of 1m49047s

Practice point guard Luca Ghiotto finished fifth Hitech rider, beating ART’s Christian Lundgaard by just 0032s

Shwartzman benefited from a better form of qualifying to finish seventh, ahead of Jack Aitken (Campos) and Virtuosi driver Guanyu Zhou

Mazepin failed to disturb the leaders in the second half of qualifying, his early effort of 1m49474 leaving him 10th in the final order

Red Bull protege Juri Vips was named a top DAMS driver in 11th place, four places ahead of HWA debutant Jake Hughes
