World news – GB – The head of the National Trust has rejected a « wake-up takeover » following complaints from members

The National Fund denied being « seized by a group of awakened people » after it was bombed with complaints from its members at its annual general meeting

During an online question-and-answer session, President Tim Parker and Director-General Hillary McGrady were asked why the charity had recognized its links to slavery and colonialism in the wake of the Black Lives Matter movement

One member, identified only as Diana of Leicester, objected to the organization’s spending of money on a report detailing the links between its property and people involved in the slave trade and colonial administration The home of Winston Churchill was included in the survey

« The majority of the members only want to see beautiful homes and gardens, and they do not have forced other people’s opinions, » she said.

John of Wareham asked, « Why was the National Trust instigating a witch hunt in the lives of past property owners? Your members want to enjoy the gifted properties in good faith without having to endure the unfortunate wake-up agenda of the modern fund management. »

Ms. McGrady agreed that there were a large number of questions about this problem but insisted that it was « not a case of trying to impose new information on people »

She said the Trust was still deciding how to use the new information and added: “This was about understanding more about the properties we own. Yes, the majority of our visitors just want to enjoy our property, but there will be people who want to know more. It doesn’t mean in any way. Expose anyone  »

Mr. Parker also responded to the concerns by saying that the National Trust is a « charity, not a political organization »

He said, “Black Lives Matter has generated a lot of positive and negative interest and there is no doubt that there has been a renewed feeling about the unfair treatment of black populations around the world.

“Every organization has reacted to this in an effort to be more open and fair but this is a general feeling

“We are not members of the BLM if our mention of Black Lives Matter is merely a reflection or our belief that we should not have a racist society It is nothing more or no less

“Personally, I am not enthusiastic to look at the distant past and judge it from the point of view of the twenty-first century. I want to reassure members that our focus is to keep our groups going.

« I hope, with the passage of time, you will see that the Trust has in no way become a political organization that has been taken over by a group of Awakened Folk or anything like that. »

Other members who participated in the hypothetical general assembly were more supportive of the fund’s recognition of its history

Piers Ansell wrote: « We were really pleased to see the National Trust as an inclusive organization. It is also positive to see a debate about some of the less attractive parts of history, particularly around slavery and discrimination. »

Another one named Michael said: “The Trust is right to recognize the great diversity of its members and visitors and the country we live in. Recognition of inequality in society (BLM or LGBT) is not“ political ”after all,“ human welfare ”was one of The founding principles of the New Testament «
