Larne defender Josh Robinson insists Linfield remain favorites for the title despite his side’s unbeaten start to the season and the pressure on his old club ahead of the much-anticipated clash at Inver Park tonight.

The Blues, aiming for a fourth Danske Bank Premiership title in five years under David Healy, take up a point tonight behind leader Larne who many are starting to believe can go all the way this season.

Robinson, who is in great shape at the back alongside former Linfield colleague Albert Watson, believes the winning mentality that existed when he won the Blues and Crusaders championships now exists in the Larne dressing room.

He adds that Tiernan Lynch’s squad has « a little bit of everything » but points out that no one gets carried away, despite scooping 23 points out of 27 and winning the County Antrim Shield in the first few months of the campaign.

« We’re doing well and enjoying our football, » said the 27-year-old. « Everything at Larne is so professional and that was evident in our performance. There is a lot of talent here that helps.

« We’re undefeated, but we don’t really talk about that. It’s all about the next game, and the Linfield game is a big one. «

He says, « Linfield is up there every year, while Larne is in that position for the first time. Linfield is the league’s favorite and the biggest club. Linfield is where we want to be.

« We are not afraid of them and look forward to the game. There is a great feeling about the area right now. As I said, this situation is new and exciting for Larne, but the players know we have to play one game at a time and collect as many points as possible to see where it takes us. «

When asked about the dynamic with which Larne became title contenders, Robinson added: « There’s a little bit of everything in the locker room. There is talent, a lot of know-how, experience and good young players. Being full time also helps with our fitness compared to other teams. We have everything in our squad to do that, but I’m not going to put any pressure on us because we don’t need any additional pressure.

« Linfield always has this pressure on him, and I felt it when I was there. You have to consistently win leagues. Linfield was expected to win the title. This is not expected with Larne. As long as we keep improving, says the gaffer (Tiernan Lynch) and the owner Kenny (Bruce). The club is happy with the progress we’re making so we don’t have the pressure that Linfield is under and hopefully that’s a bonus for us.

« The winning mentality you need has crept into our locker room. You could see it in our recent results with last minute winners against Glenavon and Cliftonville. These victories give people the belief that we can win what you need in any game.

« We have Albert Watson and Jeff Hughes’ experience, which is vital, and we have championship boys like Conor Devlin, Tomas Cosgrove, Marty Donnelly, Andy Mitchell and me. So there are winners who know. « What is required and the point is to get the right mix. «

Robinson left the blues this summer but has nothing but respect for managers Healy and Linfield and said, « I loved David and everything about the club. He was a great guy and a good coach, but I wanted full-time football and I get everything I want at Larne.

« It was just time for me to move on. I wanted a new challenge and had to make a decision and going to Larne was better for my family. «
