World News – GB – Trump says Egypt could ‘blow up’ Ethiopian dam

The US President made the remarks while announcing a normalization agreement between Israel and Sudan

US President Donald Trump has expressed his anger with Ethiopia over the construction of a huge dam on the Nile and suggested that Egypt could destroy it

Trump made the remarks by announcing a normalization deal between US ally Israel and Sudan, which like Egypt fears Ethiopia is depleting scarce water resources

« This is a very dangerous situation because Egypt will not be able to live this way, » Trump told reporters in the Oval Office with leaders of Sudan and Israel on loudspeaker

« They’ll blow up the dam eventually And I said it and I’m saying it loud and clear – they’ll blow this dam And they have to do something, » Trump said

« They should have stopped it long before it started, » said Trump, regretting that Egypt was in a domestic uproar when the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam project began in 2011

Remarkably, Trump is urging Sudanese leaders to help resolve the impasse at Ethiopia’s Grand Renaissance Dam, otherwise Egypt will « end up blowing up this dam » picTwittercom / ey0Phe0IlY

Trump – a close ally of Egyptian general-turned-president Abdel Fattah el-Sisi – had accepted calls from Cairo for mediation on the dam, with Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin leading talks

The State Department said in September it was cutting aid to Ethiopia over its decision to start filling the dam despite failing to reach an agreement with downstream countries

« I had a deal made for them and unfortunately Ethiopia broke it, which they shouldn’t have done was a big mistake, » Trump said

Egypt, Ethiopia and Sudan have been negotiating for almost a decade to reach agreement on outstanding issues related to the impact of the $ 4.6 billion Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) on their security water

Ethiopia says the project is critical for its electrification and development needs and has expressed hope to start operations in early 2021

Egypt depends on the Nile for about 97 percent of its irrigation and drinking water and fears that filling the dam will worsen a water scarcity crisis in the event of a prolonged drought

Sudan, Ethiopia’s northern neighbor, is concerned about the potential impact of the construction of the dam on its own dams and the safety of its people and agricultural land from the flooding that could result from faults in the construction or operation of the GERD

Sudanese Prime Minister Abdulla Hamdok, questioned by Trump over loudspeaker about the dam, expressed appreciation for US diplomacy and said his government wanted an « amicable solution soon » between the three countries

The speed of filling the dam will potentially have an immediate effect on Egypt

If it takes five years to fill the dam, it will cut Egypt’s water supply by 36% and destroy half of Egypt’s farmland, according to the Egyptian government
