In her weekly behind-the-scenes report, the TV personality talks about opening the show’s nerves, tight pants and leaving Made in Chelsea
I walked into my opening Cha Cha Cha last week thinking I was going to have to shoot one or two more down, they would all think I was some kind of professional Hahaa… I felt so good dancing this routine I just thought the judges would all be so impressed with what Karen and I did, but they were like, no Scores came in: 4, 5, 5 and I came second at the bottom of the leaderboard Oops!
I had never done this once in rehearsal, so I don’t know if it was just a combination of excitement, pressure, nerves, but when the music started I missed it. first beat So for the first 15 seconds I waved and then all of a sudden the glitter ball went up and my pro partner Karen was standing there All she saw was sheer fear on my face and she knew everything was already going wrong So I went off like a cannon and just tried to get through the rest of the routine with no more mistakes
They told me at the Friday rehearsal that I would open the show I mean, what an honor But I’m so sorry for everyone who must have seen me in those excruciatingly tight white pants As I was going on the dance floor, my little HRVY mate said to me, « Jamie, you are packing something in there and we can all see it! » What time to tell me when I was about to dance, eh You live and learn I guess
I was really so nervous on Saturday night And all the pressure of not being able to participate last year was still on my shoulders I got a sweet message of congratulations from my former track and field coach at the ‘school that used to go around the track with a very nervous young me before competing in the national championships (800m and 1500m was my specialty) When I hit the dance floor on Saturday it was like i was that kid again But honestly i had an unforgettable time and it was the most terrifying and exciting thing i ever did And let me tell you that once you drank a sip of nectar, you don’t want it to stop
Obviously HRVY and Maisie completely crushed him on Saturday, but does the hare still win the race? Careful, I would say!
There really is a great gang of us this year I got really close with Max George from The Wanted and professional dancer Giovanni Pernice Max and I text a lot and laugh He told me the other day: « Brother, I thought Strictly was going to make my career but I think it’s going to break it! » I’m not sure though – they must get past that gorgeous face of her first
This week’s reports all say I left Made in Chelsea I’m incredibly grateful for this show and worked hard on it for 10 years, but I’m taking a step back now so I can focus on Strictly Because that, wow, that’s strictly the right job, isn’t it !? It’s full
Made in Chelsea is all about relationships, breakups and arguments, and that’s not really what I mean I like to be happy and smile and make people laugh So I feel like I can totally be me- even on this stage strictly
However, this week I’m learning American Smooth which is a graceful and elegant dance And that’s not me at all I honestly feel like a hippo in a tutu A hippo that’s had a bad day and who just wants to get back into the water What I find though is that around Wednesday everything starts to click and I start to get a feel for the style of the routine As long as I see improvement there is some light at the end of the tunnel I am really competitive and Karen is the most amazing trainer because she is fierce and talented I think we are on the right track for this hippo to potentially turn into a flamingo
Watch out, in practice earlier this week she yelled at me, « Jamie, you’re like a crab! » And I’m afraid I shouted back, « I KNOW, I’ve never danced before! »
I don’t get home until around 9:30 a.m. at night My feet are so sore I walk on my soles all day every day I’m so thankful for that little pink butt ball that I am – I roll my feet on it every night then dive right into the tub while my lovely girlfriend cooks me food It’s the thing with dancing all day is you can eat whatever you want Know- you what, last night i ate chili beef, a pot of egg fried rice, thai curry, squid and a half loaf of banana bread And found out I love eggplant I woke up this morning and thought my stomach was going to explode Try dancing on it!
For our American Smooth routine I’m going down to a moon I’ll be wearing tails (thank goodness) and a top hat and we’ll be playing Frank Sinatra’s Night and Day, so it’s going to be really classy, a little flirty but respectful This is pure velvet and if I get higher than a 6 I honestly think I might cry
It’s Halloween this weekend, but unfortunately there isn’t a themed episode for us celebs this year due to Covid restrictions If I had the chance I would have loved m ‘dress in Kiefer Sutherland and perform a Lost Boys routine Don’t count on this weekend being strictly not scary this is the first result Arrrgggggghhhh If I’m fired I’m going to tuck into those tight white pants and refuse to leave the dance floor Everyone’s worst nightmare, right !?
Strictly Come Dancing is on BBC One Saturday at 7:22 p.m. with results posted Sunday at 7.15 a.m.
