Northumbria University faces crisis after more than 700 students test positive for deadly coronavirus The University of North East England has confirmed that students are now all self-isolating alongside of their roommates Cases of the new virus have been reported across the country

A spokesperson for the university said: « On Friday October 2, we can confirm that we know of 770 students at Northumbria University who have tested positive for Covid-19, of which 78 are symptomatic

« These students are all self-isolating now Their roommates and close contacts are also self-isolating for 14 days as per government guidelines and have been urged to contact NHS119 to book a test as soon as possible if symptoms appear »

This terrifying news comes as nearly 1,800 cases of Covid-19 have been identified among students and university staff, according to survey

A surge in coronavirus cases in recent weeks has led thousands of students to self-isolate in their halls at some universities – notably Manchester Metropolitan and Glasgow University

There have been over 200 cases at the University of Sheffield and 177 University of Liverpool staff and students have tested positive

Around 56 universities across the UK have had at least one confirmed case of Covid-19, according to analysis of university responses and media reports

At least 1,798 positive cases of Covid-19 have been identified at these universities, according to the analysis

« We are proud of the work done by our residential life team who live in the hallways alongside our students

While most cases among students and staff appear to be in northern towns, there have been some in institutions across the country

There have been at least 47 cases among students at Oxford Brookes University, while at Sussex University, a staff member and 10 students are self-isolating after testing positive

While some cases have been reported among students and campus staff, others have occurred in local communities or in private residences

Hillary Gyebi-Ababio, Vice President of Higher Education at the National Union of Students (NUS), said: « Rising Covid rates in universities require radical action now

« It is deeply irresponsible to continue to do business as usual and the government and universities need to be honest with students about what the pandemic may mean for their university experience

« Fully accessible online education must become a reality immediately and we need digital investments nationwide to make it happen »

Nick Hillman, director of the Institute for Higher Education Policy (Hepi), said while the cases are concerning across the country, he argued that the number of people spontaneously isolating themselves was a  » tiny proportion «

He said: « It is a stressful and difficult time for students right now and no one would have liked this back to school in particular

« But we also have to recognize that the number of students with positive tests and also the number of self-isolates represent a tiny proportion of all UK students

« Universities need to support self-isolating students and most of the time – but not all – this support seems to be getting where it’s needed »

Jo Grady, general secretary of the Union of Universities and Colleges (UCU), added: « It is scandalous that ministers and universities have spent the summer talking about a student experience that science and staff deemed unlikely »

She added: « The priority of ministers must now be a support program that guarantees loss of income for universities and provides vital protection for staff and students »

A spokesperson for Universities UK (UUK) said: « It is important to keep these figures in context: there are 28 million staff and students at UK universities

« Several measures are in place to promote safety, health and well-being on campuses in order to reduce risks and minimize disruption

« Where it is necessary for students to isolate themselves, universities take care of their physical and emotional well-being, including access to testing and health care, mental health support, lifelong online learning, safe social interactions, food deliveries, laundry and financial support

« Universities are currently working in partnership with their local authorities, public health agencies and others to ensure that effective and outbreak response plans are in place and clearly understood »
