Theo Hernandez scored twice as Milan bounced back from two goals and drew 2-2 with Parma, keeping their unbeaten start to the Serie A season intact. The hosts appeared to be aiming for a first loss in 23 league games – and a first in 11 games this season – after Hernani and Jasmin Kurtic brought Parma under control. But Milan showed exactly why, thanks to some goals from Hernandez – the equalizer in 91. Minute – to have a nose ahead when they went deep when they met on Sunday in San Siro. The point was the lowest Stefano Pioli’s men had earned after hitting the frame of the goal four times – Hakan Calhanoglu was responsible for three of them – and refusing to allow a goal between the visitors’ two goals.
Hernani kicked off with a side footer from Gianluigi Donnarumma after Gervinho, who took on the league debutant Pierre Kalulu – an early submarine for the injured Matteo Gabbia – pulled the ball back to the penalty spot.
Milan believed they were back on par with Samu Castillejo’s tap-in 10 minutes later after Brahim shot Diaz Hernandez’s cross in the attacking midfielder’s path, only for VAR to close them for a slim offside position.
Diaz then hit the crossbar, five seconds ahead of Calhanoglu with a volley that ricocheted off the surface as Milan pushed hard for an equalizer before the break.
And the home team continued to feel frustrated when Calhanoglu cut the outside of the post after a free kick and then hit the crossbar with a shot on either side of the break.
After Pioli brought the bodies forward, Hernani sent a cross from the right that avoided Andreas Cornelius but was driven home by the head of an unmarked kurtic in the middle.
Milan’s reaction was instantaneous. Hernandez sneaked into Calhanoglu’s corner as the hosts scored a 31. League game scored in a row.
After investigating for the next half hour, Hernandez found a way through a second time, when he was quickest to react, to kick a loose ball into the bottom corner and save a late point.
Inter, Napoli and Juventus had all the victories on the previous Sunday to increase the pressure on Milan at the top of the table.
How Pioli’s men failed to win this game is difficult to say, having 65 percent possession and taking 26 shots – six of them on target – but the late point could still prove massive in the grand scheme of things.
They have a three point lead over their bitter rivals and closest challengers Inter, with Napoli and reigning champions Juventus one point behind an exciting Scudetto race.
Hernandez will hit the headlines thanks to his brace in the second half, but Hernani deserves praise for a good attacking performance at San Siro.
His goal for the opener was impressive and Donnarumma stayed rooted in his place. He put on good support for Kurtic’s header, which looked like the winner until Hernandez showed up in the final moments.
Milan striker Calhanoglu is set to ruin his luck following his near-miss hat-trick from the six shots he managed in the 90 minutes.
He is only the fourth Serie A player to have hit wood three times in the same game, since Opta 2004-05 together with Ciro Immobile (vs.. . Bologna in 2017), Mohamed Salah (vs.. . Bologna in 2016) and Arturo Di Napoli (vs.. . Sampdoria in 2005).
– Milan avoided losing their first eleven Serie A games for the first time since the 2003/04 season.
– After Atletico Madrid’s defeat on Saturday, Milan are the only team unbeaten in the top five European leagues after being suspended.
– No team has hit woodwork more often this season than AC Milan in Serie A (11).
– Hernani (13. Minute) has scored the fastest goal for Parma against Milan in Serie A since Antonio Cassano in March 2014 (nine minutes). .
– Hernandez is the first Milanese defender to score a Serie A brace since Alessandro Nesta against Chievo in October 2009.
Milan are back in Serie A on Wednesday with a trip to Genoa, while Parma host Cagliari on the same day.
