Wetherspoons whips up pints for less than a quid as the desperate chain seeks to unload as much stock as possible ahead of this week’s lockdown

Thirsty punters can get a pint of real ale for just 99 pence until Thursday, as the booze will kick in before the pub giants can reopen, reports The Sun

In theory, the doors will reopen as soon as possible to customers on December 2, as the country is set to pass next month under restrictions

During the second lockdown, pubs said they couldn’t sell take-out pints like many did during the summer

Take-out food will be allowed under the new rules, but the restrictions have come under heavy criticism from the hospitality industry

Real Ale Campaign Chairman Nik Antona said: « The second lockdown is a devastating blow to an industry already on its knees

« Pubs across the country have already invested thousands of dollars to reopen COVID-safe environments despite greatly reduced revenues »

They added: « We also need a clear, evidence-based route map, otherwise we will see many pubs and breweries shut down forever »

Wetherspoons’ four-day sale will allow drinkers to enjoy discounted pints until UK pubs close at 10pm on Wednesday

Staff put up signs revealing shocking price drops at boozers across the country

The posters read: « Before the four week lockdown, rather than wasting real ale, it was reduced to 99p a pint »

Spokesman Eddie Gershon confirmed to The Sun: “All of our pubs in England will be serving their real ales at 99p a pint until the pubs close on Wednesday night

Cider and lager will remain on sale at normal prices as they survive the lockdown

Wetherspoons made a loss this year for the first time in its history as the pub industry struggled to tackle Covid-19 restrictions

But a source told The Sun: « Now Boris has closed the pubs and we have full cellars left and real ale won’t last a month and we had to pour it all out

« The only smart option was to share the difference and ask our true beer fans to come to our rescue and gift them our beer at 99p a pint

« We will do them a huge favor and they will do us a huge one! Our doors close at 10pm Wednesday, so the challenge is on »

Wetherspoons chairman Tim Martin had previously warned that pubs risk being wiped out with a million jobs at stake
