A 73-year-old woman was temporarily arrested and immobilized by police after trying to get her 97-year-old mother out of a nursing home

Video footage shared on social media by former Coronation Street actress Leandra Ashton appeared to capture part of the incident in a Market Weighton car park in East Yorkshire on Tuesday

In both clips, upset Mrs Ashton claims that she and her mother took her grandmother out of the house where she is « deteriorating » because they had not seen her for nine months

The 97-year-old woman could be seen sitting in the passenger seat of a stationary car with a police vehicle parked in front of her

Ms Ashton also films her mother sitting handcuffed in the back of the police vehicle, who in a clip briefly comforts her

Ms Ashton told police at the end of one video: « When the rules start to separate families, I think we have to challenge the rules »

In a Facebook post, Ms Ashton wrote: « When the rules – like so many at this time in our history – claim to be in place to ‘protect’ but yet cause untold damage to physical health and mental, then you start breaking the rules «

She claimed her mother was a trained nurse who wanted to care for her grandmother at home

She wrote: « We only have one power of attorney for the finances of my Nan Pas for her welfare

« Before the lockdown we could overcome this by regularly visiting my Nan Now we can’t My mom was arrested because she refused to take my Nan back to the nursing home

« It feels like living in Kafka’s worst nightmare Masked people coming to take you away from your parent

« For the first time in my life I find myself on the wrong side of the law »

She argued that the rules sometimes had to be « stimulating and changeable » and proposed parents were given « key worker status » to allow them to go to a family member’s private room. to visit them, feed them and take care of them

Leandra Ashton briefly appeared on Coronation Street in 2016 as Will Chatterton’s fiancee Saskia Larson, played by Leon Ockenden

In a statement, Deputy Chief Constable Chris Noble of the Humberside Police Department said the force responded to « a report of a nursing home assault » in Market Weighton at age 11Tuesday at 3 p.m.

He added: « The nursing home also reported that a woman for whom they were legally responsible was taken from their home by her daughter

« Officers found the two women and a third woman nearby and informed them that they should send the lady home, as is their legal obligation to do so

« The situation was painful and emotional for everyone and the woman did not want her mother referred to the staff at the care home

« The officer present was to make sure everyone was safe and in particular the 93 year old woman who was fragile and vulnerable and therefore made the decision to briefly detain the 73 year old woman until let the situation be calm and under control

« The 73-year-old lady was immediately released from arrest, arrested and allowed to return home with her daughter

« She and her daughter thanked the officers for the way they handled the incident

« We sympathize with all the families who are in this position and will continue to provide all possible support to both parties »
