World news – « Get out now » ????: Warning to MPs in Victoria

An urgent email to MPs has asked them to get to Canberra by car or plane as Victoria is considering an early lockdown.

Melbourne MPs have been strongly advised to fly or drive to Canberra before midnight to be in parliament next week, with the Victorian government considering an early lockdown in Melbourne.

An email to MPs on Friday said it was « highly recommended that members in the greater Melbourne area present their travel plans to arrive in Canberra today Friday, February 12 ».

Members of the Bundestag based in the state capital urgently booked seats on commercial flights on Friday morning in order to get to the ACT on time for the fortnightly session of the federal parliament.

Prime Minister Daniel Andrews is reportedly considering a lockdown for up to a week, with a five-day option being considered to try to contain the surge in COVID-19 cases caused by a leak in the state’s hotel quarantine system.

Mr Andrews is currently in a cabinet meeting to discuss COVID-19 containment options. Prime Minister Scott Morrison supports the call for a « short, sharp » lockdown.
