Autosport Podcast: What Brivio will bring to Alpine in F1

The shock news that ex-Suzuki MotoGP team boss Davide Brivio is moving to Alpine in F1 as CEO is the main topic of discussion in the latest Autosport podcast

Alfa Romeo’s Formula 1 driver Antonio Giovinazzi believes that working on his race starts was one of the keys to his improvements in the 2020 season.

After a tough debut season, Giovinazzi was next to Kimi Raikkonen held at Alfa and qualified in nine of 17 competitions ahead of the Finn.

Both drivers scored four points for the Swiss team in a difficult season, but Ferrari protégé Giovinazzi made further progress and convinced Scuderia to win him for keeping a third year with the Alfa customer team.

Giovinazzi was particularly impressed with his starts last year and often made up positions on the first lap.

When Giovinazzi thought about his season in conversation with Autosport, he gave up known that his improved starts are the result of conscious effort, on board his debut season and his peers to watch where he could improve.

« After qualifying do Let’s do the debriefing, of course, [where] you might see the lap you’ve done [and see] where you might have lost something. But after that moment I’m only 100% focused on the race and above all on the start. « Giovinazzi said.

» Because with the cars we have and which are then difficult to follow and overtake, think me, if you have a good start and a good first lap and you win positions there, the race will be a lot easier. «

» I’m really focused on watching [videos] from last year – the starts and onboards as well some videos we have from the last few years.

« And that works pretty well I would say. I am very happy with the work I’ve done this season and will continue to do so in the future. «

Due to the COVID-19 disruption, F1 drove F1 on several new tracks that it hadn’t visited in years, which meant Giovinazzi was trying to get his hands on footage from other categories to see where he was able to gain positions.

« When we have new tracks, I try n Of course, watch every video I can find on this track from the other categories – Formula 4, « added the 27-year-old.

» I’m trying to learn something from the videos, but yeah, it was’nt easy. I would say it’s a lot easier to have [a known crowd] like a Bahrain that you’ve driven before and there are so many starts you can see online and online which can happen in every corner.

« It’s a lot easier, but it was also very nice to see Formula 4 start in Imola and then I had a good first lap there again, so it was good. »
