Gucci and The North Face, already one of the most important collaborations in 2021, undermine the barely visible lines of luxury and streetwear, which include a wide range of different adventure gear and accessories. To commemorate the joint effort, Gucci commissioned artist Sean Vegezzi to briefly document the creative process of the partnership.
It was clear that each company was trying to bring the project into an organic fusion of minds with its own ideals . « The goal is to expose people from different backgrounds to new ideas and a new way of thinking, » explains David Whetstone, Design Manager for global collaborations, archives and special projects at The North Face, in the clip.
Like short recordings of the Italian Dolomite Mountains in the American Sierra Nevada show, fans of both labels don’t just want to hike, they want to walk comfortably and stylishly on the hills. « It’s a culture of creation in a garment, » says pro climber Nina Williams. « These clothes are beautiful, these clothes are capable, » confirms Whetstone.
In addition to footage of the individual mountain ranges and action shots by the contributors Williams and the graffiti artist Post AOW, the short film shows the natural hybridization of the collaboration. Sure, these garments are based on The North Face’s legacy of elegant functionality, but they’re also made in Italy to Gucci’s high quality standards, backed by the world-famous whimsy of creative director Alessandro Michele. « I believe that all clothes actually have shamanic powers, » says Michele.
Gucci x The North Face launches January 6th at Gucci Pin’s pop-up locations in Brooklyn, downtown Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago and Toronto, before going online and at selections later this month Flagship starts.
This isn’t Gucci’s only headline-worthy collaboration: the luxury fashion label recently launched an expansive Doraemon collaboration.
