World news – Golden Globes: Hollywood Foreign Press responds to backlash over lack of black members

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which hosts the Golden Globes, took time during the Sunday evening ceremony to address concerns about the shortage of black members. (Of the 87 members, zero are black.) A damning exposé in the Los Angeles Times last weekend sparked anger at the organization’s practices and prompted the HFPA to address the situation beforehand during the broadcast.

During one During the live presentation during the ceremony, HFPA Vice President Helen Hoehne said, “We celebrate the work of artists from all over the world. We realize that we have our own work to do. Black representation is important. We have to have black journalists in our organization. «

Former HFPA President Meher Tatna said, » Everyone from all underrepresented communities should have a seat at our table and we will make sure that happens. «

HFPA President Ali Sar said, the organization must « create an environment in which diverse membership is the norm, not the exception ».

In the early evening the hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler joked in their monologue about the HFPA as « consisting of 90 international, non-black members ». They then said that the Pixar film « Soul » was popular with the HFPA because it featured a black man (Jamie Foxx) who was in the body of a cat and « the HFPA has five cat members. »

Ava DuVernay , Golden Globes host, said in a statement on social media prior to the ceremony, “A lot of the artists who have done a great job this year will be reinforced on today’s show. I proudly introduce HAMILTON to applaud the art of Lin-Manuel [Miranda] and the entire cast and crew. To be clear, the pressures that will be put on the globes and their partners from now on are no longer about validation or shiny things of that particular group. The truth, which is not often discussed, is that awards play a role in the economic reality of black filmmakers, color artists and creators in this business. Unfortunately, these shiny things matter to those who fund, green light, manufacture, distribute and market our projects. Therefore, everyone must have balanced access and consideration so that the competitive conditions for artists of all types, colors and cultures are fairer. “

DuVernay’s post came shortly after various organizations in the industry made statements to bring more black votes to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. Irish about racial differences was thrilled when Time’s Up released a statement last week in protest of the awards. The Directors Guild of America and the Screen Actors Guild also issued statements in support of the protests.

Filmmaker Spike Lee, whose « Da 5 Bloods » was completely banned from the Golden Globes nominations, shared similar views on Sunday:  » The Hollywood Foreign Press is clearly busy, ”Lee wrote in a statement to Variety. “However, it was a pleasure to see our children, Satchel and Jackson, act as ambassadors for the Golden Globes. I hope the HFPA understands that it needs to diversify its membership to stay relevant. Put some sistas and brothers on this wall . You’re annoying! «
