An oversized cast of 2021 Grammy nominees paid tribute to Motown Master Marvin Gaye on Sunday.
The Gaye greeting was in honor of the 50th anniversary of « Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology), » the socially conscious statement his classic « What’s Going On » LP, which is just as popular today as it was half a century ago.
The performance included the R&B singer Ledisi, the rocker Grace Potter, the Brazilian artist Bebel Gilberto, the Maroon Five keyboardist (and solo artist) PJ Morton and, as if that weren’t enough, the Afro-Peruvian jazz orchestra took part.
« What’s Going On » was released on May 20, 1971 and ranked number 1 on Rolling Stone’s list set of the 500 greatest albums of all time last year.
Unfortunately, this tribute comes 37 years after Gaye was murdered by his father in 1984 – the day before his 45th birthday – while trying to resolve a domestic argument between his parents to solve.
