After surviving a COVID-19 scare and the reigning national champion being Minnesota Duluth, UMass will now take on St. Cloud State in the NCAA men’s national hockey championship game. Massachusetts moved into the title game following Thursday’s Frozen Four win after four players were removed from the ice due to COVID-19 protocols. UMass took revenge on Minnesota Duluth after losing the national championship in 2019. Now the Minutemen turn to St. Cloud State, who defeated Minnesota State in their Frozen Four game. However, they will do so with Filip Lindberg and Carson Gicewicz returning from the COVID-19 logs.

Nolan Walker hit a diversion 53.2 seconds ahead and St. Cloud State held back 5-4 against Minnesota State on Thursday night to make the first national championship game of the program.
St. Cloud State (20-10-0) led 3-1 early in the second half and was 4-3 behind with 15 minutes to go before finishing his 10th Goal game of the season won.
« I was just really glad our boys didn’t come down, they stuck to it, they found a way to get a puck into the net, » said Brett Larson, coach St. Cloud State. « Joe Molenaar came up with a huge goal, just added it to the lineup and obviously got into the tough areas and tipped late. »
Minnesota State took their first lead, 4-3, at the Frozen Four 4: 18 in the third half when Dallas Gerads shot Walker Duehr’s centering pass.
But Molenaar, a newcomer, linked it at 4 with his first career goal in the middle of the third, and Walker got a stick on defender Seamus’s shot Donohue to win.
David Hrenak made 25 saves for the Huskies who were injured at the end of the season in the East Regional without their top scorer Easton Brodzinski.
In the second semifinals, Garrett Wait scored in the Extra time and shorthanded Massachusetts beat two-time defending champions Minnesota Duluth 3-2.
UMass (19-5-4) advance to Saturday’s national championship game against St. Cloud State – both T eams are trying to make program history with a first title.
UMass was without four players due to COVID-19 contact tracking protocols, including leading goalscorer Carson Gicewicz and starting goalkeeper Filip Lindberg.
And it showed for much of the game as Minnesota Duluth overtook UMass 26-11 by two periods and 36-15 at the end of regulation. But the Minutemen took over in overtime with a 13-2 advantage.
