SAN DIEGO – When Kamaiu Johnson learned he had received a sponsorship waiver for this week’s Farmers Insurance Open, he took to Twitter, « Words can’t describe what it means to receive that call. »
Johnson’s PGA Tour debut will have to wait after Tuesday’s news that he tested positive for COVID-19 and was forced to withdraw from this week’s event.
In a statement on his Twitter account, Johnson said: “To say I’m disappointed would be a massive understatement. I’ve long dreamed of playing on the PGA Tour, but health and safety are paramount.” Johnson, an eighth grade dropout, received this week’s field exemption after winning the 2020 Advocates Pro Golf Association (APGA) Tour Championship.

« In times like these you always have to focus on the bigger picture, and in my experience a fork in the road often leads to new opportunities in interesting ways, » wrote Johnson. « A sneak peek into the Farmers Insurance Open and what it would be like to play on the PGA Tour only kindles the fire in me to work so much harder to pursue the dream of playing the tour full time. «
Shortly after the withdrawal, Johnson learned that his mother, Angela Rooks, had been hospitalized for complications from COVID-19. « This is going to be a hell of a nightmare, » tweeted Johnson. « My mother was just rushed to the hospital because she couldn’t breathe because of COVID-19. Please pray for my family. » Johnson told ESPN that his mother has COVID-19 pneumonia and is in hospital Central Florida was brought. Johnson must be quarantined in Southern California according to coronavirus protocols.
Johnson has been replaced in the field by Willie Mack III. Mack is slated to play Genesis Invitational next month if a sponsor is exempt. Johnson will have full support for the tour during his self-isolation period as per CDC guidelines, the tour said.
