The seventh edition of the Indian Super League began on November 20th in an organic bubble in Goa.

During the four-month tournament, eleven teams will play against each other in a league and playoff format at three venues. After the inclusion of SC East Bengal, 115 games will be played this season, compared to 95 last season.

Last year’s league winner FC Goa will meet on Friday in the Fatorda Stadium in Margao in the first semi-final of the Indian Super League (ISL 2020 -21) on the newly crowned champions Mumbai City FC.

In this first leg, MCFC coach Sergio Lobera will meet his former employer FCG again. The islanders were the second team to lift the ISL shield on Sunday after displacing ATK Mohun Bagan in a direct comparison.

The men of Lobera reached the record of Bengaluru FC 2017/18 in addition to ATKMB and achieved the most points (40) accumulated in a single ISL season. Meanwhile, the Gaurs will appear in the tournament’s playoffs for the sixth time in seven years.

Goa head coach Juan Ferrando faced a tough task when he took over the club’s reign. Several veteran stars had left and there was much to do in the transfer market.

FCG had no wins in their first three games and the chances of reaching the playoffs were slim after scoring eight points from seven games would have. But from then on, Ferrando’s side went unbeaten in 13 games – an ISL record for the longest undefeated streak – and sealed the place.

« We started the season a little bit inconsistently, but we’ve now entered the playoffs. The The biggest challenge was to maintain the commitment to demand the maximum of ourselves every day despite the short preseason and to live under special circumstances (bio) bubble) and to be under the pressure of the results with a young team « , said Ferrando on the eve of the game.

The Spanish trio of Igor Angulo (13 goals), Alberto Noguera (one goal, eight assists) and Jorge Ortiz (six goals, one assist) have so far been central to Goa’s progress.

« Igor has enabled us to play attacking football with his experience and work speed. Ortiz is an example of hard work and perseverance both in games and in training. Noguera is undoubtedly the be th midfielder in the league. I could spend hours talking about it. «  » Ferrando added.

Regarding the Gaurs’ chances in the playoffs, the 40-year-old gaffer said: « I don’t think about how difficult a rival is, I think about it about how to prepare the team to overcome one game. The next game will be a.  » Challenge due to injuries and cards, but I see it as another opportunity to keep improving. «

On the other hand, MCFC was one of the favorites this time around. The team, largely owned by the City Football Group, claimed the first cutlery in its short history with a flashy soccer ball, also known as the ‘Lobera ball « is known.

» I am very happy because CFG has given us everything and now is the time to analyze the things we have achieved. I think my players deserved to win the shield and hopefully we can get another trophy. That means a lot. « To play in the AFC Champions League », claimed the Spanish boss.

Adam le Fondre (11 goals, one assist), Bartholomew Ogbeche (eight goals, two assists) and Hugo Boumous (two goals, seven Templates) will be of vital importance to the islanders.

« It won’t make any difference to me playing Goa. Now I’m in Mumbai City. We are professionals and we play the game the same way. No matter which one Team we face, we have to win the semi-finals. It’s going to be a tough game tomorrow and we have to be prepared for it, « added Lobera.

A time penalty from Le Fondre gave MCFC a win as the two teams clashed scored for the first time this season, while Ishan Panditas later equalized a point for FCG in the second leg.

Goa have to do without four players in the first leg. The list includes the injured duo of Brandon Fernandes, Seriton Fernandes and the suspended noguera, Ivan Gonzalez.

Amey Ranawade is on his fourth booking of the season for Mumbai, while Boumous is set to return after a four-game suspension.
