Canalys recently released numbers that demonstrate the outstanding performance of the PC market in the final quarter of 2020. As a result, further details on the strength of the tablet and Chromebook categories were published.

Earlier this month, the industry watcher announced the delivery figures for desktops, notebooks and workstations, which in the fourth quarter of 2020 rose 25% year-on-year to a record high 90.3 million units grew.

Throughout the year, total PC shipments rose 11% to 297 million units. This was the highest annual growth since 2010, with notebooks and mobile workstations increasing that performance and shipments of these devices increasing 40% year over year. Desktops, which were mostly gathering dust in closed offices, weren’t that popular, and last year shipments dropped 20%.

Those numbers didn’t include tablets and Chromebooks, but these have now shown that the Demand in the fourth quarter helped push tablet shipments to a high of 52.8 million units, with an annual total of 160.6 million units, up 28% from 2019. Even Chromebooks, with 11.2 million units in record shipments were achieved in the fourth quarter of 2020. This corresponds to an increase of 287% compared to the fourth quarter of 2019, so that the full year 2020 amounts to 30.6 million units.

« The growth dynamics of tablets shows how important easy access to computing power has become in today’s world « said Ishan Dutt, an analyst at Canalys. “Its versatility not only in terms of different form factors and price points, but also in terms of connectivity options makes it an ideal device for a wide variety of use cases, from simple slates for e-learning and content consumption to high-performance detachable devices for productivity users who get used to spending more of their time at home. «

It looks like the market momentum will continue this year and major hardware vendors are doubling their commitment to the tablet form factor.

Dutt added, » Vendors like Microsoft, Dell and Lenovo have responded the renewed interest in detachable tablets with a series of announcements at CES 2021 aimed at bringing better performance and connectivity to devices for an era of greater flexibility in how people work. Going forward, tablets will be a crucial element in vendors’ PC portfolios, and vendors like Apple and Samsung that have prioritized the category will find themselves in an enviable position. “

There was also serious competition between vendors for Chromebooks, with HP staying at the top with a 235% increase in units shipped in the fourth quarter. Lenovo took second place with a 1,766% increase in shipments, with Acer and Dell completing the top 4. « Demand for Chromebooks is increasing, » said Rushabh Doshi, research director of Canalys. « As many countries are being forced to accelerate their digital education plans due to additional bans, schools and universities are demanding solutions that are easy to implement, and Google’s digital education offerings are enjoying great popularity over competing platforms, particularly in the US and Western Europe. </ "As governments in many countries work towards a much-needed 1: 1 device-to-student ratio, the demand for education for Chromebooks is expected to remain strong through 2021. Outside of education, there has also increased interest from consumers and traditional business customers in the quest for Chromebooks to provide affordable business continuity for personal computing. “
