Observations from the Yankees’ 4-0 loss to the Phillies in a spring training game on Monday night.
Jameson Taillon hasn’t played a proper game since 2019, but his fielding saw in the 4-0 loss to the Phillies turned out sharp on Monday night at George M Steinbrenner Field. The Yankees starter played some nice games off the hill on a bunt and a swinging bunt with bare hands, shooting both for outs first.
Elsewhere, the Yankees defense got off to a difficult start in the fourth inning . Jay Bruce was unable to pick a pair of balls on the first base – one on a low-line drive that hit his glove, the other on a faulty throw from Gio Urshela. Then Clint Frazier lost a fly ball in the light when it fell about 20 feet in front of him for a run to score.
Aaron Judge was deprived of a single in the sixth inning when Ronald Torreyes stopped diving on shift and kicked him out first. The judge stared at the former Yankees infielder but grinned at the defensive gem.
Corey Kluber will take the next step in his build for the season as he starts against the Tigers at 1:05 p.m. at Joker Marchant Stadium.
