World news – Joe Theismann would take over Zach Wilson over Trevor Lawrence in the 2021 NFL Draft

Retired Washington legend Joe Theismann made fun of Zach Wilson and told CBS Sports he would prefer the BYU product to Lawrence.

« Honestly, yes. [It’s] really close. We’re splitting our hair a bit here, but I would actually [take over Wilson over Lawrence], » Theismann said on Thursday.

« I just think that Zach checked all the boxes for me on this draft. Personally, my choice. My boy. «

21-year-old Wilson has been the Cougars’ starting quarterback for nearly three seasons. During that time, he’s completed 67.6 percent of his passes for 7,652 yards, 56 touchdowns and 15 interceptions. His last season as a true junior was by far his best yet. He started all 12 games and completed 73.5 percent of his passes for 3,692 yards and 33 touchdowns to three interceptions. He’s also very mobile, with 642 rushing yards on 212 attempts for 15 touchdowns, ten of which came in the 2020 season.

« I think Zach, I just love the way he throws the football. It’s hard to teach. We saw how people learned to perfect it a little, ”said Theismann. “He has all the skills; He has a living arm, he has a strong arm, he can touch it, he can shoot it. He’s 6-foot-3, he’s no little guy. He moves with great sportiness. I think when I see him playing at the quarterback he looks really ready. “

71-year-old Theismann spent 12 seasons calling the then Washington Redskins after starting his career with the Toronto Argonauts of the CFL. He is a two-time Pro Bowler and received the First Team All-Pro Award and the NFL MVP Award in 1983. That same year, he led Washington to a Super Bowl 17 win.

The New Jersey native praised the other top quarterback candidates, including Lawrence – who most believe will make him # 1 overall from the Jaguars is selected – as well as Justin Fields from the state of Ohio and Mac Jones from Alabama. However, he noted that all three were on teams with high levels of talent, which added to their values.

« Trevor Lawrence is certainly a tall kid who can walk well surrounded by great talent at Clemson. It’s a bit like Mac Jones in Alabama. You are surrounded by great talent, and sometimes you look at that talent and say, « Did that help the position a lot? » Said Theismann. “I think in the case of Trevor, who is a young man and as strong and physical as he is, he’s going to have a great learning opportunity, as does Mac and all of the young men, Justin Fields, also from Ohio . ”

Theismann isn’t the only quarterback to win the Super Bowl and suggest that Lawrence shouldn’t be the first player off the board. Packer’s legend Brett Favre recently told TMZ that he believed Jacksonville should forego the Clemson QB in favor of a completely different position.

« I would (Alabama recipient) take DeVonta Smith, » said Favre of the Heisman winner. « The last two games I’ve seen this guy play in has been mind blowing how well I know the teams know he’s going to get the ball – and he’s dominating. I think you go with a guy like that. »

If the Jaguars theoretically went villains and picked Wilson (or Smith), the Jets would have a chance at Lawrence with the number 2. However, Theismann believes Jacksonville will eventually take Lawrence and his number 1 for Joe Douglas and Jets remains available.

« It looks like the jets are the ones to take [Wilson] at two, which Sam Darnold may be putting on the market or elsewhere, » he added.
