Karen Lewis, a former president of the Chicago Teachers Union, passed away on February 7, 2021 after a long battle with brain cancer. Lewis was president of the Chicago Teachers Union until she resigned in 2018. She was also a former chemistry teacher at King College Prep High School and Lane Technical High School. Former Chicago Teachers Union spokeswoman Stephanie Gadlin confirmed in a statement that Lewis passed away at the age of 67. In a long statement, Gadlin commended Lewis for all the hard work she has done to uplift the nation.
Gadlin said, « For her tenure as President of the Chicago Teachers Union, she was the architect of today’s struggle for educational justice. » As her spokesperson, I cannot tell you how inspired I was by her leadership and vulnerability as she navigated the treacherous terrain of Chicago politics. I can’t count the number of times we have shared tears over the plight of students and people who have been marginalized for years, or the laughter from their acrid sense of humor. Karen was my homegirl. She rocked. Our city has lost a great voice. I would like to express my heartfelt condolences to their loved ones, friends and the 25,000 members of CTU. May their memory reign for all the days to come and find rest in God’s breast. “????
Lewis was born on July 20, 1953 in Chicago, Illinois. She attended Kenwood High School and later Mount Holyoke College. In 1972 she moved to Dartmouth College and in 1974 was the only African American woman in the class. She graduated from Dartmouth College with a degree in music and sociology. She later earned her Masters in Inner City Studies from Northeastern Illinois University. Lewis had been a member of CTU since 1988. In 2010, she gained control of CTU by winning 60 percent of the vote in the runoff elections.
In CTU circles, Lewis will be remembered for the famous 2012 strike. In 2012 she led the Chicago Teachers Union on a 10-day strike. After the strike, the union revised the teacher appraisal system, which prevented the introduction of earnings, and also helped the experienced teachers who worked in schools that were being phased out. In one of her previous interviews with Dissent Magazine, Lewis spoke about the impact of strikes on students.
« Children don’t do better when schools close. » You lose between three and six months learning, or at least testing. Lewis said.
Lewis was supposed to run for mayor of Chicago in 2015, but she later dropped the plan after getting sick and was later hospitalized for a short time. In October 2014, a source close to Lewis confirmed that she was diagnosed with a brain tumor with cancer. She resigned from her role as president in 2018 and served the union for 30 years.
Current CTU President Jesse Sharkey offered condolences, saying, « May your memory be a blessing. » Sharkey aside, a few others have heartily thanked Lewis who has devoted her life to reforming the education system.
