On Monday evening at the Honda Center it looked like a crush for the Swedish national team for a while.

Rickard Rakell led the charges for the Tre Kronor and the Ducks, scoring two goals and helping a third to secure a 6-5 overtime win over compatriot Adrian Kempe and the Kings. Rakell sizzled with five goals and seven assists during a six-point streak.

Kempe scored three times for the Kings after coach Todd McLellan challenged him a few games ago to produce more offensive. Kempe scored one goal each on Monday, including the goal that tied the result 5-5, with 2:32 remaining in regular time.

In extra time, Ducks newcomer Trevor Zegras sent a pass from the right wing to Adam Henrique, who ran hard towards the left goal post. Henrique just tapped the puck into the back of Cal Petersen’s net to score the winning goal three minutes into extra time.

« Such a great selfless game from » Z « , » said Ducks coach Dallas Eakins. « There is a young man looking for his first target. Instead of wiring it, he turns the game into the back door to win the game. Good thing Henrique really drives his legs and is strong on his stick. »

« Once it’s in his hands and he’s got some clearance, I’m just trying to hit my husband on the back of the ice to give Trevor an option, » said Henrique. « He’s so adept that he’ll see if it’s there or not and make the decision from there. I’m trying to give him an option. »

Zegras’ assist was the second in his emerging career. He has not scored a goal in his seven NHL games.

In addition to goals from Henrique and Rakell, Shattenkirk, Ben Hutton and Jakob Silfverberg (shorthanded) also scored goals for the Ducks, who won their second game in a row after trailing 6-3. Max Comtois had three career-height assists and Ryan Getzlaf had the 699th assist of his career.

« I have no explanation for this, » said Rakell of his hot phase. « I don’t think I’m doing anything other than maybe taking a little more time to know where to go, where the net is and where to place the puck. That’s all I can think of .

« I’m not sure what is clicking right now, but it feels good. »

The Ducks tried to protect a 5-3 lead to start the third without the services of striker Troy Terry (upper body) and defender Josh Manson (lower body), who were forced out of the game. Manson returned to the line-up on Friday after an absence of 20 games due to a strained slant.

The Ducks and Kings are playing the third part of their eight-game season at the Honda Center on Wednesday, and it was uncertain whether Terry or Manson could play. Eakins didn’t have an immediate update on any of the injured players, but he was hoping to find out more on Tuesday.

In addition to Kempe’s second hat trick of the career, Dustin Brown (power play) and Andreas Athanasiou scored a goal for the Kings, who closed the 1-0, 2-1 and 5-3 deficits by forcing the game to work overtime. Athanasious goal 1:18 in the third half started the rally.

« I tried to be more online, » said Kempe after scoring his seventh, eighth and ninth goals of the season. « I was hungrier. Before that, I leaned back and waited. I wanted to do more of the preliminary exam. I put the puck in the net. »

McLellan praised Kempe’s game, but was annoyed by his team’s inattention to detail.

« Tonight we are really disappointed with the mistakes, » said McLellan. “I just thought we were really, really sloppy. We had way too many individual mistakes, the turnover from our tape and the laconic game.  »
