An overall solid, steady and structured effort was in vain on Friday when the Kings took the lead at the last minute and fell 3-2 in extra time against the St. Louis Blues on Friday evening at the Staples Center.

It was the third time this season that the Kings gave up a 6v5 goal in less than a minute of play – the other two were against Minnesota and San Jose – and all three late goals were overtime or shooting losses.

Jeff Carter and Dustin Brown scored a goal for the Kings. Goalkeeper Cal Petersen was flawless in regulation except for the first shot and the penultimate shot with which he was confronted. He made 19 parades.

« We’re taking out minute 3 and minute 59 and you leave the rink pretty happy with the whole group, » said Kings trainer Todd McLellan.

Striker David Perron scored twice for the Blues and winger Mike Hoffman scored the extra time winner. St. Louis gave Jordan Binnington a rare night off when Finnish rookie Ville Husso got the nod on the net and made 28 saves.

Young players like Kings Center Gabe Vilardi and Blues winger Jordan Kyrou had their moments, but all four goalscorers were veterans with a combined age of 135.

“I thought we actually played a really good game. We had a lot of really good chances, ”said Brown. « We just haven’t found the back of the web as often as we’d like. »
As an extra, the Blues were lined up in a 1-2-1 formation during a delayed penalty, with the puck being moved from the left wing to the top of the zone and then to the right face point, where Hoffman hammered a one home -Timer for victory.

St. Louis forced overtime by only scoring 43.5 seconds in regular time and counterattacking as the Kings pressed for a goal with an empty net. The Kings rushed back to level the onslaught, but Perron caught the defense which allowed him to choose his corner and toss the puck high on the short side to level. It was an NHL-leading seventh goal for St. Louis when they play 6v5, and it was the fourth straight loss for the Kings since their winning streak in six games.

« To give up a goal late … I think it’s a good lesson for us as a group, » said Brown. “During the six-game winning streak, we squeaked out a few games in which the bounces went our way. You have to play a full 60 to get out of this little skid we’re in.  »

Despite all of the Kings’ unrewarded efforts early in the game and late in their loss to Arizona on Wednesday, they were compensated with a break early in the third half. They began the power play phase and after Kopitar’s pass failed to connect for Brown, he landed on a skate when Brown spun to find the puck. It was Brown’s fifth goal in as many games against the Blues this season and the sixth power play goal overall in 2021.

« When we got back on the bench we both giggled because as soon as I gave him the puck we both knew what was going to happen, » said Brown. « That’s the advantage of playing with a man and clicking with a man for the past few years, no matter how many years we’ve played together. »

Kopitar ranked third on the franchise’s list of career assistants with Dave Taylor. Kopitar and Brown have now played the majority of the regular season games together (1,067) by two active players in the NHL. Blackhawks defenders Duncan Keith and Brent Seabrook had played 1,069 games together but Seabrook was eliminated from three surgeries, one on his shoulder and one on each hip, on Friday due to complications.

Five minutes into the last frame, Adrian Kempe had an outlier, but was rejected by Husso on the right pad.

In the second phase, the Kings continued to control the flow of the game, restricting St. Louis to mostly outside shots, many of them by their defenders. But it took almost 17 minutes to finally get on the board.

In a counterattack with defender Tobias Bjornfot, who jumped into the game, winger Andreas Athanasiou pulled the interim defense of St. Louis into the middle of the ice. He found Carter had a streak before the game, and Carter slid into goal with a flick of the toe that resulted in him hitting Husso with a backhand shot.

St. Louis scored a power play on the first shot of the game. A messy line change saddled the kings with a penalty for too many men on the ice.

« The line that scored the penalty wasn’t even on the ice and that’s unacceptable, » said McLellan, who also criticized his team’s unfortunate press for the empty net before Perron a second time met.

On his first goal, Perron ran to the front of the zone to support the puck.
