World news – Know Your Enemy: MSU’s 1st rematch at Rutgers

Aaron Henry rides down the course during the Spartans victory over Rutgers on January 5, 2021 at the Breslin Center. Henry scored 20 points in the game and 27 in the Spartans’ previous win over Nebraska.

Know Thy Enemy is a weekly Q&A that moves the perspective from the eyes of the state news to the eyes of the student newspaper of the Michigan State Basketball opponent changes. This week, State News beatwriter Jayna Bardahl spoke to The Daily Targum’s Dylan McCoy ahead of Thursday’s Rutgers-MSU game.

After a 20-day break from play, Michigan state men’s basketball is on its way in New Jersey turned off to face Rutgers at 7 p.m. on Thursday.

After struggling with COVID issues, the Spartans join the matchup in the conference game at 2-4am and have to start their game quickly.

This week, Bardahl McCoy asked several questions, for more information on the Scarlet Knights.

Q: In the final match between Rutgers and MSU, the Michigan State Defense stopped much of Rutgers’ offensive production and the Scarlet Knights only 30.5% of the total shooting held. What can Rutgers change in his attacking strategy to make this game better?

A: I think you (Rutgers) should go in more. They have a big advantage, a noticeable height advantage over the state of Michigan, and I think they should use guys like Myles Johnson and Clifford Omoruyi. I think Jacob Young will have an increase in this game because I think Rutgers needs to stay inside more. A common theme for Rutgers during their losing streak recently has been to settle for a lot of outside jumps. If you’ve ever seen them play they are not a shooting team so they definitely need to get the ball in more and do more on the offense because most of the time on possessions a man gets the ball and then stops. They’re not exactly a heavy off-ball move, but it’s something that they definitely need to improve.

Q: MSU has been struggling with sales all season and we can see that fight is going on reinforced as the Spartans will play off an almost two-week hiatus from COVID issues. How can Rutgers benefit from these spartan glitches?

A: I think Rutgers, if they bring their aggressive style with them, they should be able to. Steve Pikiell is a very defensive coach. Rutgers is a team that often receives 8, 9, or 10 steals in a game. They are really good at pressure. I think Jacob Young will probably get his man up and running all the way from the back yard, lots of traps, lots of doubles as you’ll see. I think Rutgers just has to be super aggressive to get the state of Michigan out of its comfort zone and have the ability to take over the game.

Question: « MSU’s Malik Hall and Thomas Kithier kept Ron Harper Jr. at 13 points in the last match between these teams. » How can Rutgers work to create more opportunities for their leading goalscorer?

A: The teams have done a great job lately to beat Ron Harper. I think the ball is going to go to someone else and it’s up to someone else to lead the indictment. Ron just didn’t play really well and I have no inclination that he’ll score 25 again against a well-trained Tom Izzo team that will probably defend pretty well. I’m expecting people like Geo Baker, Caleb McConnell, and Paul Mulcahy. I think these people will pick up where Ron dropped off last month. I think you will see an even attack by the Knights, but I don’t think you will see Ron Harper as the top scorer if I had to guess that it will likely be Geo Baker.

A: I will take Rutgers, to win 62-58. I think it’s going to be a good defensive game if Rutgers can hit their free throws and a three every now and then and shoot a good percentage off the field that they should take. I definitely think it will be an interesting game when Tom Izzo and Steve Pikiell get together and practice a lot of fireworks. It’ll be better than your first game.
