World news – Labor pledges to close the gender pay gap in GSP

Coinciding with International Women's Day, Anthony Albanese proposed four steps to close the gender pay gap between Australian workers.

According to Anthony Albanese, Labor will take action to close the gender pay gap in the Australian civil service if it is elected to government.

At a press conference Monday morning coinciding with International Women’s Day, the Federal Opposition Leader Four Steps to Close the Gender Pay Gap Between Australian Workers.

One of those components was closing the gender pay gap in the APS.

« The Commonwealth can do the private sector not asking to do anything without showing leadership on your own, and under a Labor government, we would conduct an exam in all departments of the Australian Civil Service in the first year using the tools of the Employment Equality Agencies to precisely identify you where these problems lie, « said Albanese.

In the November release In the 2019-20 service status report, it was found that there is a 7.3% gender pay gap in favor of men in the GSP. While that figure fell from 9.1% in 2015, « more needs to be done to narrow the gender pay gap in the GSP, » the report said.

Albanians said if Labor were elected, the skills and capacities of the Fair Work Commission would be strengthened to order wage increases for workers in low-wage and female-dominated industries.

The work would also give workers the right to speak about their salaries by setting the clauses about salary secrecy.

« Well, I think most Australians would find it extraordinary that there are clauses that forbid people from saying their working conditions, » said Albanese.

« What that means – the nondisclosure clauses – is also a handbrake, so there is no comparison to see if women and men doing exactly the same job get exactly the same amount. «

Companies with more than 250 employees would be legally obliged to report their gender pay gap publicly.

« Initially this number will be 1000 and this will be introduced gradually over more than four years, to give companies the time to do so, « said Albanese.

» We know companies already have to report gender pay data to the Agency for Gender Equality in the Workplace. But right now nobody knows what the results are. That doesn’t make sense. «
