Sandown was the scene of another iconic moment on Friday. Larry Perkins presented the famous number 11 to Anton De Pasquale.
Shell V-Power Racing Team recruit De Pasquale will be number 11 in his first full-time season with the Ford team.
It comes after the 25-year-old wore the number 100 at the season opener in Bathurst as a tribute to sponsor PIRTEK.
He helped the number in 1993, 1995 and 1997 to Bathurst victories and handed it over to Kelly Racing in 2009 after he had his Supercars outfit closed.
While the # 11’s winning history is largely documented, the origins of the number were fairly straightforward for Perkins.
The six-time Bathurst winner, however, was delighted to have a role in the changing of the guard to play.
« When I entered my car for the Australian Touring Car Championship for the first time, I picked 11 because it was just even numbers, » said Famer Perkins’ Supercars Hall.
» It was cheap and easy to print, and I only needed replacement parts with an N Carrying more with me, which made it easy to swap out the car.
« But it became part of the story, and I’m really happy that it continues in Supercars today.
» Anton is a fantastic youngster Talent. When Dick [Johnson] and Ryan [Story] asked me if he and the team could use the number, I was more than happy that they could carry on their legacy. «
De Pasquale was honored to have custody of the And has his personal affinity with the number 11. « I drove with the number 11 in Europe and won the Formula Renault championship in 2014, » said De Pasquale.
« The Moving overseas to race was the first big step in my racing career and life, and then I moved to # 11.
« Now moving to Queensland and to the Shell V-Power Racing Team is my second big step. I’m looking forward to driving # 11 again.
« I want to say a big thank you to Larry for trusting me with his number and I’ll make sure I do it proud. »
Johnson A longtime rival of Perkins and who made the # 17 famous, thanked Perkins for joining De Pasquale e had allowed to camp the famous # 11.
« I would like to thank Larry for his approval. Anton, the team, Ryan and I are all honored to entrust us with his number, « said Johnson.
Number 11 will be AEDT on Saturday at 9:20 am for Practice 1 at Penrite Oil Sandown SuperSprint return.
